Nurses-Louisville Kentucky: Do I need to pass local nursing board to practice in US?

Published

Hi! everybody i just have a question about being a nurse at Louisville KY

I'm currently here in the Philippines. I haven't pass my Local Board exam here but trying my best to pass.

My question is... by any chance , just in case i wasn't able to make it - passing the local board exam here. Can i still work as a nurse in KY eventhough i wasn't able to pass my local here ? and what are my options...

The reason why i'm asking this is because my boyfriend is planning to do a fiance visa, get married and build our dreams there.

Please help.. i really need information in regards to this concern.

Just curious, how and why did you pick Louisville?

because my boyfriend is from Louisville KY..

Once you get to L'ville, go to the hospital you are interested in working at and ask to see the Nurse Recruiter. He or she should be able to guide you in the right direction.

Unfortunately, that does not usually work. Most US recruiters that are hospital based are not aware of any of the requirements for working in the US as a foreing nurse, and then there are differences if they are going over on a fiance visa, requirements again change.

Most nurses are presented to facilities with everything already done, not just starting. Better information here, in the Primer at the top of this page.,

I work in Louisville with a nurse from the Phillipines. She has been here less than a year, here is what she said (she isn't sure of the cost): take the local exam, it is the prerequisite to take the CGFNS, after passing that take the two English exams (spoken, the TSE and written, the TOEFL). Or the combination of both which is the IELTS (recognized by the US). Then you can apply for visa screen if you pass the CGFNS. The visa screen will not be issued unless you pass the two English exams.

I talked to Ruby King from Kentucky Board of Nursing few days ago over the phone and ask additional question through e-mail---- i did ask if i can still work as a nurse in some hospital frm Louisville without any local license? she said "Before you are allowed to work in the United States as a nurse, you must obtain the VisaScreen Certificate from CGFNS. Some of the hospitals and facilities here will allow you to work as a nurse aide to get acclimated. Once you receive your VisaScreen Certificate, I can issue a Provisional License which will allow you to work as a Registered Nurse Applicant (RNA) until you pass NCLEX."
