This is a serious topic for sure. In the news recently, a Nurse was brutally attacked and severely injured. We can all be prone to immediate danger and fall victim to patient assault. Have you been trained in early recognition of violent behavior? What precautions do you take to avoid an attack or at least improve your chances of not becoming that victim?

I am aware of my surroundings. I try not to place myself in dangerous situations with patients. I DOCUMENT every threat that is made towards me. I also never allow myself to be in a room without a clear exit. I carry pepper spray when walking to/from my car. I don't think there is much else I could do.

DOCUMENT ANY THREATS! They should be taken very seriously. If the PT is known to be agressive/violent, take an aide or another nurse in the room with you whenever performing care. If I know a patient has a history, I talk calmly to them and try not to say very much. Alot of questions usually irritates them. They can really hurt you, really and when they become agressive they could hurt another patient. Just be very mindful, as a nurse you have rights to a safe work environment.
