Yes there needs to be clear guidelines for the nurses but I do disagree with your comment about seeking the doctor because of his knowledge.
I totally agree with you. What I was trying to say was that because of the perception of the role of nurses in the community, the doctor is often viewed as the one with 'knowledge'.

Yes there needs to be clear guidelines for the nurses but I do disagree with your comment about seeking the doctor because of his knowledge. Many times I have sat with patients and relatives to discuss things not necessary resus and been able to give them better support and developed a good relationship with them. We as nurses do get to know the patients/relatives better than the doctors and can be easier to discuss issues with them. I am not saying nurses should always do the approaching but no reason why they can't make the first move and leave it up to the doctor. This is where the multi disciplinary team comes into play and you do what is best for patient
