Has anyone heard this saying before? How did you respond?

I cannot find any sort of policy at my institution for situations like this.

I normally let this slide depending on the acuity of the patient. However if its a ICU level, I immediately ask for break relief RN or the charge RN.

I wouldn’t dream of interrupting a colleague’s break... they are off the clock and recharging.

If it’s an urgent need to get the bed freed up (I work in SICU) I’ll ask for the floor charge nurse

That! >>>> If it’s an urgent need to get the bed freed up (I work in SICU) I’ll ask for the floor charge nurse

People need to recharge, indeed. I feel like OP is looking for a fight... there is a reason why nurses burn out so fast, that's one of the reasons.

Specializes in Emergency.

My hospital has gone to a report form in EPIC which is created from a dot phrase. It's standardized and gives the H&P plus important changes, labs, etc. With the higher acuity patients we also give either a face-to-face or the receiving nurse calls for report either before or after the patient is transported.

ICU or PCU to med surg (I’m med surg nurse) my charge or nursing supervisor will tell me I’m getting a transfer of age, gender, admitting diagnosis (maybe some basic info). Often If a patient needs to transfer quickly due to many high acuity needing ICU in the ER needing that bed, they tell me. Typically nurses are OK if I’m at lunch (I’ll alert my charge if I was on my way to or at lunch) when they call to tell me about transfer, especially if they don’t say it’s urgent. I’ll say how long I have left of my 30 minute and ask if it’s OK to wait. We’re good about making sure everyone gets lunch. I’ve called over to them (ICU, PCU) to get report too and that nurse is at lunch. As long as appropriate nurse is covering I don’t mind the delay. But many transfers from my unit to higher level go right away with a rapid response called and change of care level is decided. ICU charge nurse is involved.
