Nurse Supervisor

I am having a hard time landing the Nurse Sup. position that I want. I have though about going to work in a nursing home to get some management experience. Help! How do I make my self more marketable for a position. I have a lot of work experience but little management experience. Should I got to a Nursing Home?

The current position you hold, there's no chance for promotion?

I have heard that a nursing home is one way to gain management experience. So, if you have that opportunity, you have worked as a Staff RN in one prior to this move, and you would like to do it, take a nurse leadership position in a nursing home.

Otherwise, your other option is to look at why you are being rejected where you are currently applying. I had the same trouble you described and after I looked at what I was missing as a potential new nurse manager candidate, I was able to make much needed corrections, which assisted me in landing my current and first Assistant Nurse Management position. Good luck! :)

I became a house supervisor at a small specialty hospital because nobody else wanted the position: the pay was not competitive and it entailed a great deal of responsibility without much authority. I'm no longer supervising.

Perhaps you could apply as an external candidate to other facilities. My former workplace hired supervisors from outside the organization regularly.

No not at this time

I am not sure what I am missing but most places highlight the fact that I don't have any management experience. How can I gain this experience and not be given a chance.

Networking is one way. Some hiring managers will hire a new nurse manager if he/she likes the person and has the time to train/mentor that person. Training a new nurse manager takes a lot of time and energy. So, it is challenging to land that first job if you do not network. Also, usually Assistant Nurse Manager positions are entry level management positions not requiring a lot of management experience, but usually requires experience as a Staff RN and as a former or current Charge Nurse, because that shows progressive nursing leadership.
