I applied for the SICU residency. Start date is end of October. I was scheduled for an interview but withdrew myself from consideration because the commitment is a little less than 4 years or 3 years after orientation . Apparently the 3 year commitment is fairly new b/c prior to that it was two years.
Three years is a very long time especially since the contract begins after orientation, so it's more than 3 years. That's so insane, I can't even wrap my head around it. My bf is getting his PhD fully paid for by his employer and he doesn't owe them anywhere near 4 years (He's not a nurse). I think hospitals are overstating how much is involved in training new nurses. Sure there's a lot of money involved, but this should be considered a normal cost of doing business. Moreover, what is the alternative? They can always hire more experienced nurses, but they have to pay them more. Or they can give new nurses less training and find themselves at the center of lawsuits every month. I assumed great on-the-job training, albeit very expensive, is associated with better patient outcomes, which means more awards, revenue, and great press for the hospital; not I trained you nurse so now you owe me almost half a decade. What!?!? LOL, sorry I needed to vent.
But to answer your question, I applied Saturday, On Monday I was e-mailed that my application was under review, and I received an invitation to interview Wednesday.
I talked to someone in HR at Parkland this week, about their October residencies. She said that they only have one person going through the applications, but they usually have two, so it may take a little while longer to get an interview date this year. If you are waiting, just keep on waiting, because you may get an email/call still.

Hello Nurses ?
I am interested to know if any of you are applying for Nurse residency positions at Parkland Hospital for 2014. Does anyone know what salary they offer for a nurse with some experience. Any information on how many applicants they interview would be helpful also.
Thanks and good luck to all those applying
