Where are the emergency department NPs?

  1. Wondering how many of us here are toiling away in the emergency setting. Would like to hear a little about how you practice in your area. Fast track? Main ED? Hours of day working? How long is shift? What kind of provider mix?

Interested in how things are getting done other places.

Would love to hear about a typical day.

    Any takers?

I'm in a rural hospital that has a very small (2 bed) ED. I share call with 3 other providers (one other NP and 2 MD) to cover it 24/7. We have around 1800 pts/yr.

Rural area here, too. Sole HCP once weekly now - 24 hour shift. 4 bed ED. Share call with several providers on staff. Duties include deliveries during call when needed.

I work in rural AZ. Sole provider for 5 bed er when I'm there. There are other pa's and md's who staff. I have one nurse and one aide. I work 38 hour shifts.

Interesting. I too work in a rural ER, 12 beds, about 23000 visits per year. I am the double coverage for the peak hours.

In addition, I occasionally pick up shifts in a metropolitan ER with approx 40000 per year volume.

OOOh you guys make me so jealous. I had 10 years in a level one trauma center with very large ER residency program and they wouldn't hire any mid-levels. However, rumor has it that the rural hospital down the road a ways may be hiring mid-level providers come Jan 07...crossed fingers!
