ACNP or AGACNP? Help?

Specialties NP

Published

So I will be graduating from a dual role FNP/AGACNP program this May. I decided to go with certification through ANCC, since they offer both, after some consideration but not much insight. Now I see that I am still able to take the ACNP exam but they also offer the AGACNP. Which one should I take???

The AGACNP is still a fairly new thing, is one more marketable than the other? I would think that just the title "acute care" would make the older one more marketable since it implies ALL acute care, but the specification on the newer one may be better, I really have no clue here.

Please help?

I thought the ANCC is done with the ACNP exam, and has formulated the AGACNP exam per the LACE model. At least at my school, I know I was the last class to take the ACNP exam December 2013, because it was changing to include more geriatric questions to coincide with the aging population. My school restructured its classes to include more geriatric lessons, to prepare the next class to take the AGACNP exam.

The ANCC is accepting applications for the ACNP exam until December 2015. This is why I am asking.

If I were you, I would take the AGACNP exam. I wish I could, but my class structure at the time did not meet the requirements to take the AGACNP. Now, if for whatever reason I let my license lapse, I will need to go back to school and take the gero classes I missed, and then take the AGACNP exam.

Oh, okay. Thank you!

Exactly this - I was so annoyed to finish our course and then be told this. Take the current exam, not the expiring one.

where did you go to school if you don't mind I am interested in finding a good dual track program?
