Published

Are there many schools for a masters of science in nursing - nurse practioner program around the Houston, TX area? Has anyone attended or graduated from one? If so, could you tell me about it?

Specializes in Pediatrics Only.

I have friends who graduated from TWU's NP program, and who have nothing but good things to say about it.

The same goes for UT's NP program - nothing but good things to say about it.

Good luck!

I obtained a post-Master's FNP certificate at UTHSC in Houston. I would recommend it.

I graduated from TWU's FNP program. I highly recommend it.

Prairie View A&M has an np program i believe.

Specializes in women's health, NICU.

UTMB in Galveston is somewhat in the Houston area. I hear it's pretty good too. I believe most of their programs are online (PNP, NNP, GNP); the FNP program is not online, however.

I was also looking for similar info. I'm in the Austin Area

and i'm looking for an online FNP

program. I thought UTMB's family NP program was also online. Anyone graduate from it? Any other suggestions? In terms of finding a job does it matter where you graduated from? Thanks!

Be ware, do not go to Prairie View A&M FNP program!!!! It is garbage!!!! The instructors do not answer your questions, ignore you with your hand up. They do not give reviews after exams, all you get is your name and your score. I took a Pharmacology course with no text book!!!! The text was out of circulation and the instructors (A Pharmacist & A Nurse Practitioner) instructed us to bring tape recorders and record lectures and type out our own notes! The instructors would post power points the day of lecture at 3pm when class is at 5pm, giving you no time to review prior to class and causing 57 people to clammer in the computer lab/copy room to print out the power points prior to class. After a group of students complained and requested test reviews for the Pharmacology class, the instructor posted one exam on a table with correct answers highlighted and students had to enter the room bare with no pens/pencils or writing utensils, walk in a line, look at each sheet and exit the room with no questions to be asked. When we asked for an explanations to each question, we were told "you are adult learners figure it out". That is absolutely rediculous! How do you know what answers are correct or why other answers are incorrect? A student showed the Nurse Practitioner of our Pharm course that other programs especially IVY LEAGUE like George Town, Vanderbuilt etc go over each test question and ensure that students understand what the correct answers are and what the incorrect answers are.....she told them "that's not how it is done in Texas, make that suggestion when you graduate". At Prairie View A&M you are very much on your own and set up for failure! Don't waste your time or money, RUN!

After completing a nightmare semester at Prairie View myself and 3 others transferred out and now I attend St. Joseph College of Maine...LUV IT!!! The online FNP at SJC, is absolutely phenominal in comparison to the brick & morter program at PV. Thank God for SJC!!!

This program is so disorganized it is rediculous!!! A million and one hoops to jump through. They can NEVER find your paper work, instructors don't return emails or phone calls until after 1wk, when their policy is 24hrs. Several typo's in their assignments, grading comments and class instructions. The computer system is always on the blink. I submitted my transcript from a previous Master's degree that I completed in 2009. I submitted it to PV in the begining of the semester in January for review, the process was to only take 2wks for them to decide what to courses they would give me credit for. Til today (5 months later) I am still waiting for an answer!!! any day now....that I am going to another school, LOL! Unlike most schools that will accept credits as long as they are no older than 5yrs, Prairie View wants the course to not be older than 6yrs by the time you graduate out of their program. So if a course you took in 2006 is 5yrs old now, they will not accept it, b/c by 2013 when you should graduate, the course will be 7yrs old. They want you take the GRE even though they don't count the score. I.D. Badges are on a 1st come 1st serve basis and you need your I.D. to enter into the building. Garage decals are limited, even after you pay for it. They promise you a lap top for Graduate students, you never see it!!!!! and only a hand full of students get a lap top in their 2nd year. You always have to submit things 2 x b/c they loose EVERYTHING! Staff, Instructors and Dean have a nasty attitude are rude, unprofessional and need home training!!!! When ever students complain, they all say "Your Adult Learners, Deal with it". Don'twaste your time with this FNP program at Prairie View. It's not worth your energy!!! Don't waste your money!
