I AM A NEW GRADUATE RN WITH GREAT CONCERN ABOUT THE NURSE PATIENT RATIO AT THE FACILITY WHERE I AM EMPLOYED. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS THE AVERAGE NURSE PATIENT RATIO FOR A MEDICAL UNIT.

my hospital is baaaaaaaaad on nurse patient ratio. WE are a small community hospital med/surg/tele/ortho etc most days we have an average of 20 pts sometimes a lot more or a few less. daylight usually staffs 3 RN one to do charge 1 or 2 lpns for meds and pt care and 1 or 2 CNA/Pt care techs. Evenings 2 RNS 1 lpn 2 aids. Nights 1 maybe 2 rns if you are lucky 1 lpn and 1 tech. Last week we averaged 30pts or more with 2 RNs at night lpn and tech. So that means most nights i had 15 or 16 pts. Talk about rough!!!!!!
