hello..i have some questions that is related to applying for a job.hoping that you could help me out :

i have applied online to one of the hospitals as they said they dont do any drop-in applications. it has been 2 weeks now but nobody ever contacted me about it..should i follow up or does that mean that i dont fit the position?

secondly, another hospital recruiter had called me 10 days ago ( i think) for the application i did online .i applied for a wound team.no experience related to it but i had been a med-surg nurse for 7 years and had seenand treated over the course of my expereince all wounds there is. so when asked if i had the expereince or any wound certification i told her i have none.she asked then if im interested in applying in med-surg.i said i am but thats is why i wanted the wound team because they work 5 days a wwk no weekends.so i made it clear that i am not really interested in working weekends.she said that i can do prn and then said that she will get back to me if prns do weekends.and that was it.until now i have no more calls from her. so did i make a mistake of telling her that im not interested in working weekends?

thirdly, how soon do you tell an applicant that she does not fit a job position?..you see i really dont wanna be left hanging and hoping. if im not accepted inyo apositon that i want i want to move on and go looking for somethin else.

fourth....i have been in med-surg for 7 years and would like to have a specialty for a change as im terribly bored with it already that is why i tried applying to wound team or pain clinic eventhough i really dont have any actual experience with it but one way or another they are related to med-surg.the only thing that frustrates me is when recruiters would say since you dont have any expereince with it would you like doing med ward instead?..should i just give in so as just to have a job?

thanks a lot for your 2 cents..

Hi,

You seem to be having difficulty finding a niche, at the moment.

Certification is valuable, applicants with certification and experience win the job hands down. Are you able to complete certification?

Telling someone you don't want to work weekends is a death knell. I don't even interview applicants who state they are applying because they want m-f jobs, and we only operate m-f. Health care is a 24hr, 7day a week, 52 weeks a year job, and you should have known that when you applied to do your course.

Instead of saying you want to work m-f trying re-phrasing. Say you are interested in the job, because you are interested in the clinical position, or you know someone who moved to that field and that has motivated you, or something along those lines.

Do you have to stay in a hospital setting, try looking at dialysis, or free standing ambulantory surgery centres. And if you really want to get rid of boredom, go and work in the operating theatre or emergency, but there are no m-f jobs there. That is the payoff. m-f jobs are often more boring, jobs with a higher stress level are often more rewarding. To some people, not all.

I do not know how old you are, but if you are under 40 the current staffing situation should be a temporary setback because when you look at projections of the nursing workforce you can see that the older members will be retiring and there are less nurses to replace the vacancies occuring. This means, in reality, that management is probably going to accept less qualified/experienced applicants, because there will be a decrease in the pool of applicants.

:)

Good luck,

Joanne
