Nurse making the jump from UK to USA, needing a bit of advice

Published

Hello all,

I am a UK educated and trained nurse looking to move over to the USA. i have passed my NCLEX and have applied for a load of jobs but I still work and live in England so they are obviously reluctant to employ me. I was just wondering if anyone had made the same move and what the differences between british and American nursing are? I understand there is more of a diagnostic aspect and the assessment process is more in depth than it can be here. If anyone could share their day-to-day duties and responisbilities that would be super helpful!

Thank you in advance!

Thank you I will look into it. I have only done clinical and theory hours in mental health. Even thou 1st year was foundation so I did study generalised nursing

Shortage in any hours will result in you not getting approved to sit NCLEX

I have got my transcript sent to me and it's shows I have done clinical as theory hours in mental health setting. How many hours do you need to apply to sit the NCLEX exams. And where to I go to start applying to see if I qualify.

The state will decide once they see your application and assess your transcripts. Which state are you applying to?

North Carolina or any state around the region. Do you know of a state that will be fast in deciding?

most states are the same which is about 4 months

Your credentials normally have to be reviewed by the Commission for Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (cgfns.com) prior to being submitted to the state of your choice, and that takes several months.

Hi. My situation is similar but slightly different, really looking for some guidance and advice!

I moved to SC a year ago from Scotland where I trained as an RN. My husband who's British military is based here for 3 years and we are on a NATO visa, he wants to get out and we want to settle in the US. I've had my CGFNS report issued to the SC BON and am (like many UK RN's) deficient in clinical hours in OB, peads and psych. I have done a CNA course (non-credited) and am currently working as an ER Technician and have a job and sponsorship offer from my hospital once I pass my NCLEX. BUT...I am finding it extremely difficult to find a college to make up my clinical hours. Either they can't do 'just clinical hours', I'd have to enroll in the full RN program, or I can't enroll in a college because I only hold a NATO visa instead of an F1 (because the RN course is a credited program). If anyone has been in this position I'd really appreciate hearing your story or any advice you have!

Thanks :)

Hi all

I currently looking to make the move to the US as a UK trained nurse but need the practical hours in Paed, mental H. and Obst. I'm in contact with a agency in yhe US who signposted me to the 'Gateway to Nursing in North America' course, currently run by Kings College.

I was due to start this course in May but there wasn't enough applicant but it's due to start September, fingers crossed. Has anyone heard of this course or been on it??

Try Florida BON, you might not need the extra hours

Has anyone from the UK had any luck with their application recently?

Hey! I had luck in 2018 through CGFNS. I studied pediatric nursing at LSBU. I think I was able to make it because a lot of my hours were made up in my first year. And even then a lot of my placements were on different specialized wards. What kind of nursing did you study?

Hi. I did it in 2011. It's very helpful to do a preparatory course, like Kaplan, especially as the training and examination system in the UK is very different from the US. You can do it online from anywhere. https://www.kaptest.com/NCLEX/courses/NCLEX-courses#
