Nurse Licensure Compact

Published

The Ohio State Legislature just passed a Nurse Licensure Compact bill. The governor of Ohio will sign it soon. Thank You to Senator Kristina Roegner for her unwavering support of this bill. To all Ohio nurses: Welcome to the compact!

Would you post a link detailing this?  As well as one detailing your post regarding Pennsylvania joining the eNLC as well?

My pleasure.☺️

Ohio SB 3 Enter into the Nurse Licensure Compact.  As both the OH nurses association and board of nursing oppose the eNLC it will be interesting to see what the governor does with this.

Pennsylvania SB 115 Authorizing Pennsylvania to Join the Nurse Licensure Compact.  As the PA nurses association previously supported this last year, I presume they still do.  In addition, several other statewide organizations do as well.

As I maintain both OH and PA licenses in addition to my NC multi-state license, I am hopeful that both of these become law.

I have been following the progress of both of these bills very closely.

  • Senator Roegner negotiated tirelessly with the Ohio Board of Nursing. The BON changed their status from "opposing the NLC" to being an "interested party" in the NLC.
  • Both the Ohio and the Pennsylvania bills passed by a large majority of votes in all committees and all legislative sessions.
  • Jim Puente (the director of the National Council of the State Boards of Nursing- the organization that manages, provides expert testimony for and lobbies for the Compact) is quite confident that both bills will be signed by both governors.

I am pretty sure that you will only need your North Carolina license, next year.

I don't know.  I lived in OH 6 years before relocating to NC.  Both the OH SNA and BON have both strenuously objected to the NLC and eNLC every time it has come up.  I was somewhat gobsmacked that it actually passed both the senate and house.

I know. Ohio is a pretty interesting situation. But........

  • Senator Roegner was deeply committed to getting the Compact passed. She seems to have a lot of experience and respect in the Ohio State Legislature.
  • There was tons of testimony heard in legislative committees, and most of it supported the compact. Many of the legislators themselves commented about how Ohio has a nursing shortage in the rural areas of the state. One of these legislators ( a Nurse Practitioner, I believe) gave compelling testimony in support of the Compact.

Pretty sure that you won't need those two extra licenses in a year or so.

It seems one of the main points for the passage of this bill is to attract more nurses to the state of Ohio.  This is a bit off-topic, but why do you think Ohio has trouble attracting healthcare workers to work there?

I, for one, am hoping to move to the Ohio or Pennsylvania area in the next three years (give or take), so this would be fantastic to only have to apply to one state, but be able to work in many.

The governor of Ohio just signed Ohio's Nurse Licensure Compact bill. The compact implementation date will be January 1, 2023.
