What would you do if you worked with a racist?

Nurses Relations

Published

A few days ago my supervisor completely shocked me and my co-workers. She has let all of her nurses know that the reason she changed her child's school was because there were not enough blonde and blue eyed children in the class and her 4 year old was feeling uncomfortable. The class that her child was in was diverse in ethnicities. She makes many racial remarks about the color of our skin and our racial backgrounds. Initially when she joked about it we all thought it was just that- a joke. We did not make any kind of remarks to cease her joking. We have now made it clear that we will not tolerate any sort of racist remarks or jokes. It is too late ,for me anyways, to have any kind of respect for this woman. So now with her true colors showing, my question to all of you is this; How would you maintain your professionalism when working with someone who is an outright racist? :(

I agree with the above person. Todd was calling the racist stupid, not the original poster. No need to wrap your hands around any poster. :)

It's very easy to read things the wrong way. Heaven's knows I've done it a few times myself.

You are very tactful in correcting me. My sincere apology for letting my

those words from me.

What would I do if I worked with a racist?

I can't help but to share this one - I found it outrageous.

My friend and colleague was called a nazi by a very upset physician and this was over a mundane issue. She is blonde and has a strong nordic accent. She took it really well; looking baffled and saying *but I'm not even german*. The physician was fuming.

He got away with it - believe or not.

I have to admire her. I could not have kept my mouth shut in that situation.

I'm not sure I admire the way your friend handled it. I would have reported him. But I'm Jewish and Nazi is not a term I find remotely acceptable.

I admired that she did not put herself in a worse position by reponding to this man. She did report it at the end of the day and nothing happened.

The person who used the word was jewish.

All the more reason he should have been reported. That's a foul term in any instance. If I were her, I would have turned on my heels, gone directly to my supervisor's office and filed a complaint. It would have been a favor to him in the long run. He learns nothing if he gets away with it.

Just my opinion.

You can bet the ranch that if the nurse had called the doc a Nazi she would have been fired immediately.
