NURS Research

Could anyone tell me if the book for nursing research is really needed?

Thanks ;-)

I wouldn't try to do that class without the book. It clears up a lot that you might not understand. There are usually several used copies that you can buy on amazon or rent them

I am currently in the course and from all of the posts that I have read on here... It really hasn't been made clear. Lol however, to be on the safe side and to save money... I rented the book! Go to bookrenter.com and they have really good deals! I wish I would have known about them forever ago! It would have saved me a lot of money! The first quiz is coming up this week so we shall see if the book is really necessary!

The book is good to have as a fail-safe. This class is extraordinarily time consuming with OOH, JC club, and article critique. It's like trying to arm-wrestle an octopus with both hands tied behind your back and a fork jabbed in your eye for spite. If MBrickle is still around, this person is an excellent resource for this class.

* Use RefWorks/Flow: https://flow-proquest-com.ezproxy.uta.edu/login/ or https://www-refworks-com.ezproxy.uta.edu/refworks2/default.aspx?r=authentication::init

The updates made to Flow have made it more attractive as a reference manager now, but I am more familiar with RefWorks. You can import your data between the two, seamlessly, so it's just a matter of preference and which one works best for you.

* Get familiar with Google Scholar, Wiley, and Cochrane (hint: the last two are free through UTA) otherwise you will be used like a punching bag by Ebsco-Host/CINAHL... or you will punch your computer.

* Wiley Online Library - Journal of Advanced Nursing has plenty of topics that will satisfy JC Club criteria and will save you time.

* Google Scholar - can be a bit of a wilderness, but it provides a good starting point for locating articles of interest.

*The majority of the test questions can be answered by reading the class notes provided by the professor and they are on blackboard. Review the notes carefully and thoroughly.

If there isn't someone who immediately picks up the whip and starts cracking it on the other group members, then that person will need to be you. There isn't time for debate or playing nice unless you really, really want to drop $1,200.00 to take the class again. Start exchanging phone numbers and getting used to texting at all hours.

Thank you so much for the helpful information! This course is literally driving me insane. I can't wait for it to be over.

I was the group leader and I feel like that might be happening more haha.

i neglected my other class, Texad history, so this week is going to suck trying to juggle these two course and play catch up on all of the reading and assignments plus the quizzes in each course.

Btw, do you have any advice for the quizzes?

I have read so many forums on it and so many people have said different things. One person said to do all of the reading in the book and study the notes.... Then other people have said nothing works because it is such random info.

Uhhh I really hope I have hair by the end of this course. Going insane is an understatement!

From personal experience, the answers to 90% of both quizzes were in the class notes. The other 10% came from the book. Scoring a 90 on each quiz won't hurt in the least. If you have the time to do the work AND read the book, then you won't go wrong. The experience that I was the research had became an either/or situation, so I erred on the side of winging it with the notes and came out just fine. The JC Club article on the other hand... We got slapped by a misunderstanding between the coach and the class. It happens, life goes on, and we all survived which is about as good an outcome for that class as possible.

Thank you! This helps relieve some of my crazy stress! Your feedback is extremely appreciated!

I am just going to try my best to survive these courses! Haha can't wait til the finish line is here!

This class is a PAIN. I'm in it right now. I was group leader this last week and I am not doing that again, took my turn and I'm all good now!

I don't have time to read all the chapters, notes and ooh so I'm focusing on ooh and notes with book skimming. I have a feeling that many will get a little lower grade then they would like because things aren't always made as clear as they could be. I mean, if their is a group roster due each week then hey, why not post it ON BLACKBOARD from the start instead of sending it only a few days prior to it's due date to my uta e-mail to which I only have access to when I'm home, and I'm not home much because I work way too much! I don't know, seems like that would have made things less of a surprise on that front.

These next few weeks need to just BE OVER. :angrybird9:

I feel your pain! I am in this course right now too! It is literally the worst thing ever. Terrible design and instructions. I was group leader last week and it sucked. However, I still feel like I take the reigns on most everything lol

I want to pull my hair out! People don't do their parts and their sections are not well written at all.

I hope we survive this course!!! Also, I am praying my GPA doesn't take too bad of a beating. This whole "group grade" thing really ****** me off. It's not right at all.

If there were Purple Hearts for a nursing class, everyone who survives nursing research would get one. If you don't trust the rest of your group, then you're going to have to take control the rest of the way. That means almost around the clock monitoring of the course, but in the long run, who really wants to drop another $1,200 and 5 weeks of their life to go through it all over again? Hang in there. It's only 5 weeks, and when it's over, you will never have to re-experience that level of suffering again.
