Nurisng Students in LTC

Do you get them? What do they do? What type of students? Gosh I would love them....I love teaching and my staff is sick of my mini lessons:chuckle

I did a rotation as an LPN student. The CNA's tried to get us to take care of more than we were assigned and the nurses got aggravated with us trying to give meds during their med pass. Our facility has now teamed up with a local college that offers CNA classes , so that's a great thing! I haven't seen any nursing students where I work now.

We have nursing students from our local community college. They start with bedmaking and direct care their first semester, return later to do meds and treatments, and end up here doing some management training. It's wonderful having them here and I have hired four nurses from classes in the last year.

I have intentionally tried to create an atmosphere of welcoming "learners" at our community. We also have vo-tech students learning to be nursing assistants. They used to bring some of the students here and take some to other facilities. Now they come only to us because we treat them so well.:)

I also have had two student nurses from the Deaconess, online program and that worked out wonderfully. We also take social work interns.

We have had nursing students in the past and they are coming back this year. I think it benefits everyone. Some of the 'old' nurses can see the excitement of a new nurse who has just finished her 1st IM or 1st foley insertion (and maybe remember why we wanted to be nurses in the first place) and the students can certainly learn from us old ones. Another benefit for us?....they always come in the fall and we "let" them do our flu shots. Saves us hours of time and they get more practice than they need giving shots to people with less than perfect arms...or buttocks!

I love LTC and love teaching. One day I'd love to mix both up and teach. Right now I'm just doing every other weekend. I've been at my current place for over 10 years and would love to do more when the kids get older.

Those of you who have students come in, do you find staff turnover is less? What about staff morale and the communities view of your home. Obviously your facility needs to be in good standing.

Oooooooh! Flu Shots! What a wonderful idea! Thanks!

Our community is highly regarded in the wider community. Having the students here gives them a relationship with our staff, residents and policies and procedures that makes them feel comfortable taking a job here. Also, many of the students in the programs have been uh...... not kiddos? and so they like LTC and my "living in our forties" staff!:)
