The number of informatics nurses in the U.S. is estimated to be about 8,000, according to the U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services - Health Resources & Services Administration preliminary findings of the 2004 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurse.

As of December 31, 2008, ANCC reported 708 nurses were certified in nursing informatics.:yeah::up::idea:

I am a new member here; actually, this is my first time to participate in the forum. I am currently completing my MSN specialized in nursing informatics, but I am still working as a bedside nurse. I'll start applying for the informatics position in our hospital. Do you think I can sit for certification exams while I am still working as a staff nurse? Please advice.

Thank you

Are other certifications, such as in Health Information Technology, useful in this field? At my facility everyone is encouraged to gain certification in their field and for those just starting an Informatics position, this may be an option. Just a thought,
