NSA positions at Lifespan

Hi, I was hoping someone who works for Lifespan, or knows about these programs can help me. I am very interested in getting some kind of NSA position for Lifespan, at Hasbro or Miriam hospital. Does anyone know when they start hiring? If i am not a certified nursing assistant, can i still apply if i have taken my med/surg clinicals at school? Or do i have to become a CNA first. How hard is it to get these positions? And how do i apply??

Edited to add... If i get the position at Miriam, since its still lifespan, would this help me potentially get a job at Hasbro? Or no, since Hasbro has its own union?

And what is the advanced program for BSN students?? I am a BSN student.

Hello! What school do you go to and what level are you currently at? The only reason I ask is because I know that BSN students are preferred (a family friend of mine works for Lifespan). I just put in my resume for the Lifespan hospitals (any of them) and there are currently no positions open. Miriam just hired a bunch of CNI's (clinical nurse interns) about a month ago, and they are not hiring again for a while. I'm just waiting for the next round of hiring. I would suggest putting in your application on the lifespan website and wait to see what happens!

Oh, and yes you can apply without CNA experience, as long as you've had at least 2 clinicals (including medsurg). That was one of the first questions I asked to the person I know who works for Lifespan. :D

Thanks! =) And.. i go to URI in the end of my Jr year. Do you know if a certain GPA is needed for the program? I had heard that was the case... Thanks!!

So is it true that you have to work all 3 shifts (days, evenings, nights?) I'm hesitant to apply because of that. I already have a regular full time job, plus school so the internship would be a weekend thing ideally. I would love to have that experience though, but it seems impossible to get in with all the nursing students out there competing for a few positions. But it never hurts to apply anyway!

No you don't have to work on all three shifts. However, if you plan on working days then yes you will have to work an off shift (evenings, nights and weekends) on occation but if you work evenings or nights and do at least one weekend a month (I think its only one) then you don't have to work all three shifts. In my opinion you work a lot more working on evenings and nights anyway because as a rule of thumb you tend to have nurses who are more recently graduated from school and usually are more willing to teach. That's just my opinion though...

Here's the deal. While Miriam is a part of Lifespan just as RIH and Hasbro are (among other hospitals), Miriam's CNI program is exclusively their own. If you are accepted into Miriam's CNI program then it is expected that upon graduation you will work for Miram hospital. It sounds like you really want to work for Hasbro from your post but I'm not sure so maybe you could clarify your goals for us. The NSA program at RIH and Hasbro is very different from the CNI program at Miriam. The CNI program at Miriam is basically two levels; the first level you are basically working as a CNA so that you can be more comfortable with patients and the hands on care of basic nursing and the second level you are basically precepting with an assigned nursing and shadowing his/her assignments. I am not in Miriam's CNI program but I have talked to people who are and it seems like a great program (probably one that I would try if I had any interest in adult nursing :p). The NSA program at RIH and Hasbro in all honesty is a nursing student who is basically functioning as a CNA and while that is an important role it is not the same way that a CNI at Miriam functions. I will say that the NSA role at RIH and Hasbro requires you to be proactive in your own learning and to prove to the nurses that you are ready and willing to learn everything they are willing to teach you. I work as a CNA in Hasbro's Emergency Room and even though I am a CNA I make sure that all the nurses know that I am a nursing student and I really want to learn so they tend to make a better effort to teach me. Its all about being proactive in your own education (which you're doing because you're looking for positions already.) Lifespan positions come up all the time, it means you should be checking the website once a week to see when new positions are posted. I know that in my department positions have been coming up recently looking for new techs (the CNAs/NSAs) but it just takes time before they become posted for the public. Just keep looking around and trying to apply for positions.
