NP: WA, AZ, NC?

Published

Wife is a PA I'm an NP we live in Phoenix but are entertaining a move. Should we stay here or go to WA or NC? We are just wondering if anyone here is a PA or NP in any of the 3 states.

Look at how your practice will be affected. PA practice is pretty uniform across the board while NP is not. Some restrictive states don't allow NPs to order DME for example. don't go there. I'm sure you'll find WA to be more enlightened in this regard than NC.

Specializes in ICU, trauma, neuro.

My preference of those would be Washington.  NC is not IP.  Arizona is of course IP. Also Washington does not have income tax.  Thus, if you move to a state with 5% income tax and you both earn say 200K that is an "instant" 20K per year out of your pocket (if you are moving from a state without income tax).

My first NP job was in Washington and I am careful to maintain licensing there.  Although I am not driven toward independent practice, I do value practicing to my fullest capacity.  There's a culture of respect for NPs in WA.  I sometimes wish I had not started my NP career there!  I moved to another state for a specific specialty opportunity.
