NP classes

My program was set, I did part time, and worked full time............. so there wasn't any options about which classes to take, it was already set, mine was a brick & mortor (sp?), not online............ but you can do it!! just hang in there!! it is very stressful!!! but take it day by day!

There are many people who are able to handle working full time and doing school full time. Its all about the individual. I am also planning on attending a mostly online FNP program in the fall. I like how I can do school work anytime that way. I work 3 days during the week so I won't have to quit my job or make hard schedule changes just to go to class. I can go to class at 3am if I want! I plan to start out FT and work FT just to feel it out and I can change to PT if needed. Good Luck!

Thanks for the response NauRN. I actually thought about starting the program part-time to see how stressful it would be, then maybe increase to full-time. But I guess I will make the final decision after talking with my advisor. Have you heard of any particular classes to take together ex. Pharmacology and Patho. I've been told by several people that these two classes can be very difficult if taken together. Any input?

I have my associate's degree, so the program I will be hopefully getting into is an ADN-FNP where the first year is bridge work... I have to do that full time to get it all done in the year allotted so that is one of the reasons why I am just going for it full time first. If I can't handle the bridge work full time then I will have to cut back. There is no option for me to drop down to part time at work because there is no part time people in the ICU, and I am not yet ready to drop all the way down to PRN.

As far as classes, I believe my program helps you to determine what classes should be taken together. I know just from RN school that pharm and patho took a lot of studying, so I would probably try not to take those together if possible and maybe pair it with a more theory class, or ethics or something you can tell will be easier. I would hope your program might have a similar thing where they recommend to you what to take when. But I don't think it would be totally impossible to take pharm and patho together... there is the advantage of getting those 2 out of the way first thing and be able to relax more after that. Depends on your job too. I work in an ICU so there is no way I would be able to sneak in any study time at work. We are just too busy during the day. If I was on nights that would be a different story.

If you can get in touch with someone who is already in the program you are looking at, they could probably help you out a lot on deciding, since all programs are different.

I hope I was able to help... of course I really don't know what to expect either. I think if you are going to go just part time them any combo would probably be ok.

These are not too bad to take together. When you get into the clinical setting is when it gets rough. Right now I am at the mercy of my preceptor MD so I never know what hours I will be with her.

I have been accepted into a Nurse Practitioner program for Fall 2011. I am a little nervous but ready to get started at the same time. I just completed a RN-BSN program on-line and worked full time. I know it may not be possible for me to continue to work full time in Grad school. I wanted some insight/suggestions on what classess I should take together or classes to avoid taking during the same semester. I plan to do the first semester part time (2-3 classes) just to get a feel for the program. Any suggestions or advice you can give me on this. BTW: I am attending a local university where the full time program is approx 5 semesters.

I just recently got accepted into a FNP program for Fall 2011, but my school is a brick & mortar. I'm also going PART TIME and working FULL TIME. However, some classes will be available online. I've heard HORROR STORIES of taking Adv.Patho & Adv.Pharm at the same time or either of these with Adv. Assessment.

I was thinking of taking Theory & Adv.Assessment (1st semester), then Research & Adv. Patho (2nd semester), and Adv.Pharm & Adv.Nursing Role (3rd semester). What do any former or current NP students feel about this CLASS COLLOBORATION?
