Now I am confused!!

Nurses General Nursing

Hello all, I am currently a pre-nursing student, at this present time I will be ready to apply to nursing schools this fall. I live in ca in the bay area and it is very competitive to even get in. For the past three weeks I have been volunteering at my son's elementary school. I have been helping the speech therapist and I am having an amazing time! I love it. I am working with k-5. We see the same students weekly and I cant explain the joy I get from the progress they are making. Some are autistic and some arent, some just have speech delays and the like. But I really like it. My family expects me to be a nurse since I have come this far but I'm kind of rethinking it, I dont want to let anyone down. I like nursing also it has always been a life long dream. I have been taking my prereqs forever it seems. But now I am very confused. :crying2: Sorry I just needed to let that out since I havent told anyone about it.

You can be a nurse who works with the populations that you describe. The number of available options for work in nursing makes it attractive as a profession. You could also pursue a degree in speech pathology after you get your nursing degree if you so desire. Lots of nurses work with special needs populations and find it very rewarding.

Speech therapy is a great career too! I have known a couple of them personally and they provide a great service in many different settings. You should be able to find a board for speece therapists.

Sounds to me like you would be happier working with children  the way you have been. Sometimes you have to think of yourself not what your family expect of you :nono:. In my family, women finished high school, got married, had kids, maybe worked a job. Continueing Education was for the men. Imagine how much flack I got going to college. But it was worth it. :yeah: Do what you want, not what others want. You'll be much happier, and so will your charges.:loveya:

Good Luck in what ever you choose.

I say do whatever you feel passion for. Life is too short not too pursue what makes you happy. You can always go back to school to be a nurse.

Go with ur heart! If this is where u feel the happiest then go for it. Don't let any1 make u feel any different. And I am pretty sure ur family will understand bcuz they love u. If not they will get over it. Trust me they will.

I dont think U R confused at all..........more..........afraid to break the news. You say you love working with the speech therapy and I believe you. The way you say nursing has been a long time dream, sounds like U R trying ton convince yourself.

Ah. The age old question. Go into something you love or something stable. I dont know if speech is stable or not.

Look into how close you are to being able to do speech.

If I were you, I would listen to the small voice that is within you. I am in my 4th semester of nursing and 3 people dropped out because they felt that nursing was not for them. Go with what you love, and if you feel that nursing is what you want in the future then you could always start later in life just as I did. Congratulations, it takes a very special person to work with children, you are an amazing person that this world needs. Many Blessings to you in whatever journey you choose.

If you have found your passion I would stick with it. There are lots of therapists at hospitals that see pts on a daily basis. I imagine speech therapists have to be in demand also. Here in TX they have a program for speech delayed children to get therapy from a private organization a few times a week. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of it. The therapist you are working with could probably share some resources with you. :o)

Lots of great info on there, maybe that will help you decide. I thougt about going this route, I think it is a fascinating career, just can't afford to finish by bachelor's, then grad school. Plus, all two grad schools for it are hours away (there is a good undergrad program near me though). If I had known about this when I was younger, before I got married and had kids, I think I would have done this. Good luck with whatevery you choose

Thanks all for the wonderful advice!! I have made my decison. Although I will be finish with my nursing prereqs this semester I will also be done with my associates degree so I will transfer this fall to CSU East Bay under the Speech Pathology and Audiology major. They have a wonderful program, they also have a Speech and Hearing clinic on campus. As some of the previous posts said you do have to have a masters degree to get your licsense but you can work as an assistant therapist with a B.S. degree while you are in graduate school. I have done my research, they are in very high demand, they money is good depending on what type of facility you work in. They even have traveling speech therapists just like nurses! I have told my family, mom wasnt too pleased but the rest of my family was happy about my decision. EKSTASIS its funny you should mention Texas because that is where I plan on relocating in a few years:yeah:
