NOVA-Medical campus?

Published

My friend (school teacher) has offered my to come stay with her in northern va. i live in Georgia. im currently in school taking my preqs for the nursing program at my local community college. i have 3-4 more classes to go until i can apply. I also work in a retail store. i want to work as a CNA but im waiting for call backs for interviews (low job market).

Well my friend said where she lives is a developing community. There are jobs and i can go to school at NOVA-Medical campus. Seems like a good idea. the preqs for NOVA are only like 4-5 class and i completed 2-3. but i don't want to go somewhere that i never been to. should i check it (program) first before jumping head first in this situation? Does anyone know what the NOVA-medical Campus is like?

NVCC or NOVA has a great nursing program, the NCLEX pass rates are the best in the area. The campus is nice and everybody there is really focused on their studies. As for the job market I have no idea...some of the hospitals, depending on the floor have a hiring freeze in effect. I would suggest sending your transcript in to be evaluated so that you know what you have to take. The registration for Fall 2009 classes is in June.

The Medical campus is nice and is "new" being built only a couple years ago. You might want to bear in mind that for at least a year you will be out-of-state for tuition maybe until you finish. Entrance is competitive with preference for in state students. I just read a post about jobs in the area, upshot is you can prob get work but maybe not in your field of interest.

The medical campus is very nice, so is the nursing program. However, if you are conceidering such a drammatic move (form one state to another), maybe it would make sence to drive over and check it out first. Traffic in Northern VA is very intence. Best wishes!

Out-of-state tuition is PAINFUL. Summer semester is my first term as a resident and I couldn't be happier.

However, I have heard nothing but good stuff about NVCCs nursing program, the MEC is a beautiful new building.

I just want to clarify something. While there are only about 4-6 pre-reqs for NVCCs nursing program, it is my understanding that most people that actually get in to the program have also completed most or all of the co-requisites as well (HLT 141 & 250, PSY 201 & 202, SPD, and HUM). I haven't met anyone that has just blazed right through the pre-admission checklist. But you could spend your first year here taking care of that. It is what I did. And it helped lessen the blow of tuition. That way you would be in-state for admission and tuition for the nursing program.

That's a good point - I recommend taking all the co-reqs you can before starting the nursing program. Especially if you're going to have to work while you're in nursing school. You have to put in many hours of studying if you want to get good grades in the "big" nursing class (8 or 9 credits per semester), and having other classes to worry about is stressful.

Best of luck!

Yep, like Krenee stated, get as many of the little classes out of the way if possible. Will help make it a bit less stressful. I had finished all of them prior to course commencement, and have found the course really not that stressful, of course I dont work, and have no kids, lol

The Medical campus (MEC) is a fairly new building, one has to pay for parking. Some park their car in a close by neighborhood which is about a 10 min or so walk away. The metro is a few miles away, but it is connected by a bus. have never taken it, so no clue on how often the bus comes around.
