Notice of resignation

Published

My wife is a nurse and I'm trying to get a job that will make us relocate. She keeps telling me that she has to have a 6 week notice or it goes on her permanent record and will be hard to find another job. I have a hard time believing this. Is she right? I'm hoping to know by mid February and move mid March. A 4 well notice would be fine. She's convinced when he boss issues the schedule for March in mid February she's required to full fill March schedule

Your wife's employer should have a policy on submitting resignation aka employment termination. My health systems policy is to give notice based on # weeks vacation per position to be considered giving adequate notice/eligible for rehire: clerks = 2 weeks, RN's = 3-6wks; Management 2-3 months.

The average notice time is 2-3 weeks. However, it is best to look at your organization's policy. Is your wife in management?

This would make a significant difference. Generally speaking, in this area most line staff are required to give a minimum of two weeks notice in order to be eligible for rehire. It is considered proper, even though some employers may not formally require it, for managers to give 30 days notice.

It purely depends on her employer's policies though I have to say expecting 6 weeks notice seems extreme even for management. Two weeks to 30 days is the norm, depending on the position.

I can see there being some issues with relocating though. It sounds like it's your job you may be relocating for and the new position isn't a done deal quite yet. Your wife can't really consider giving notice until you've formally accepted the new position and have a firm start date so she knows when she needs to be done. Plus if she needs or even just wants to work she will also need to find a new job in the new location. There's really no point in her doing that until you know for certain that you will be moving there.

If your new job starts too soon for her to give a decent notice can you move first and then she can join you when her job is finished?
