Mission vs. Park Ridge

I am a new grad RN looking for jobs in the Asheville area. I am wondering about people's opinions on Mission Hospital and Park Ridge in Hendersonville. Mission was originally my first choice because of it's location, but they do not seem eager to hire new grads and also I have heard some not-so-good things about the facility lately. Park Ridge has shown interest in me and I am considering a job there. Is it a good place to work? I wish it were closer to town but I would take a short commute over unemployment any day!

PARK RIDGE HAS A GREAT REPUTATION! I work for mission as a psych tech currently. You can always work as a psych nurse initially, but I think it's important not to lose those medical skills. I would try Park Ridge. Everyone I know seems to enjoy working there. I am in the LPN program and trying to find a job will be very difficult for me. Bridge program next...good luck with the search!

I am also a new grad. I have applied at both Mission and Park Ridge. I haven't gotten a call from PR but I have an interview at Mission in a few weeks. I'm nervous about it but I guess the best thing to do is wait and see if I'm even offered a job, then worry about it! :eek:

Oh wow that's great. About how long after you put in your application at Mission did they get back to you?

I'm not sure about this particular position but I first applied May 1st because that's when they said new grads could start applying.

How did the interview go? I still haven't heard anything from Mission.

and I don't think I got the job at Park Ridge, they never called me back after my interview.

The interview went well (I think). The interviewer told me that she ranks her candidates as high, medium, and low and that I was ranked high. I still haven't heard anything from them so far but my application status hasn't changed on the website either so there is still hope.

I have another interview at Mission on Monday but it's in a department I'm not too jazzed about. I'm hoping to hear back from the first one by then! It's driving me crazy!

I never did hear anything from Park Ridge.

PARK RIDGE! They have a higher level of integrity than Mission. I know I worked for Mission for 10 years all the way down from Admin to a floor nurse. Let me take the liberty of sharing one of my earlier posts:

I am a former employee. I can tell you it is NOT a teaching hospital (although they would like to be) and as many of us who are "older former employees" they have been going through "letting go" of really good experienced RNs who have been with the hospital for many years by coming up with drummed up reasons to write them up ( they practice this 3 strikes and youre out kinda thing there dont dare call in sick even if you are obvously ill and even if you have a doctors note) note the policy states on the job descriptions " at the descretion of the manager.This allows for loose interpretation of policies and managers to create made up "unit specific policies" "at their descretion". A few years ago, the hospital said they were going broke, and they were looking at every way to cut costs. One way we have discovered is that they have been letting go of all of us long timers and especially those of us over 40 who may cost their self insured health insurance system more money. Also we figured they were sacrificing years of expertise and experience for cheaper wages with new grads to save money. Several have been to attorneys and have tried to prove age discrimination but their legal department has their HR people cover their tracks so well with loopholes and such that it has been nearly impossible to sue them. Also it was on the local news also that they have a bad reputation for not paying or denying several workmans comp cases which were clearly their fault. There are several nurses who are now destitute as a result of this. Several unfair labor practices have been observed as well and when it is brought to their attention, youre out the door. As for getting a union in? Forget it. They even have a "Union-Free Workplace" policy on the books and send their management personnel to classes on "How to stop union activity in the workplace". I have actually seen this. Stay away if you want to keep your sanity. They may sugar coat it and make it sound all candlelight and roses. But like any one knows, you can have a beautiful bedpan, but its still full of stool in the end.

and the only way to really successfully succeed at Mission is to turn a blind eye to the corruption and sacrifice your title as "Patient Advocate" and let your integrity as a nurse fall to the wayside to climb the corporate ladder called Mission Hospitals. I refused.

I guess the interview went well because I got a job offer today. FINALLY!
