Hello everyone,
I am new to this site, but think these forums are absolutely FANTASTIC! It's great that fellow nurses/nursing students can network, ask questions, seek advice, etc.!
I have a BSN in Psychology and have just applied to NSU's ADN program that will start this Fall. I choose to apply to their ADN program rather than their 2nd degree Bachelor's because I would have had to take about 15 extra credits of pre-req.'s before I could apply. Since I already have a bachelor's I just wanted the quickets route to becoming a nurse! I feel like I have definitely taken the LONG way to getting here (as I'm sure most of you feel as well)! ; )
I also applied to Thomas Nelson, but unfortunately didn't score high enough on the NET to even be considered. I scored a composite score of 44 and you need atleast a 50. I have a strong science and English background, but math KILLS me! Ugh!
NSU's nursing website that letters shoudl be sent out May 15th. Anyone else apply to this program as well? I'd love to have someone to wait/stress/celebrate/cry with (depending on the outcome, ha). ; P

Wow! There is no one else in the Hampton Roads area that applied to Norfolk State's nursing program? I thought there would be more than just me!
Well...I'm here...anxiously awaiting... : )

Hey!!
I'm kind of new to the board also....let's just say I'm reader, not a poster. lol. I applied for NSU in the fall 09' also. I'm already in a Nursing program, but I need to be somewhere cheaper and I missed home so I'm back in the Hampton Roads area. I applied to NSU and Hampton University...Hampton accepted me in their program, and now I'm just waiting on NSU. NSU is my first pick, and like you I'm sitting here waiting for the letter; I can't wait til Friday! :-) Let me know when you get your letter!

Hi Lacy! Thanks for responding. It's nice to know that there is atleast one other person waiting with me! ; ) I was accepted last year to Hampton University, but after getting more details about it, I decided it wasn't for me. I already have a B.S. in Psych, and the program at HU would have been quite a bit more credits than NSU. At this point, I just want to be a nurse already!! Also, HU is pretty expensive! It sucks when you compare it to the fact of how much an ADN program costs at a community college!
Anyhow, I have a question maybe you could answer...besides tha 4 required classes (general math, alegbra, biology, and chemistry), and overall GPA, do you know what else is being taken into consideration? Like for people like us who (I'm assuming...) already have Micro, A&P I & II, etc., I wonder if we get more points towards admittance?
Thanks!
Hey,
Yeah, Hampton is really expensive, but I have been doing my research and I applied to the VA Beach campus because unlike the main camus it's so much cheaper! The main campus want over $12,000, and the VA Beach campus only cost a little over $4,000 a semester and it's accelerated. Big difference; so I wouldn't mine going to the VA Beach campus since I'm already in a Bachelor program and it will keep me with my right class. I do understand why you didn't go though, you would be wasting your time with the extra classes and all.
Now about the four required classes, I think they only look at the four required classes and our overall GPA. I went to the orientation and that's the way she (the admission director) made it seem. I would hope that they would look at our other classes, because like you I have taken both the Grammar & Comps, Anatomy & Physiology, Psychology, etc; and made good grades at that! lol.
Wow...I don't even know where to start...First of all, thank you so much for mentioning the fact that the VA Beach campus had a lower tuition. When I read that, I wasn't sure if it was correct, so I called Hampton U to verify. Of course, yes it is true. The VA Beach campus is like 4-5K a semester and the main campus is something ridiculous! I don't know whether to be mad or excited. On one hand, I'm mad because at no point did anyone at the school tell me there was a difference in tuiton. It probably would have made a big difference in the last year of my life, as I think I would have gone ahead with the program. Instead, I was scared at the outrageous cost and ended up turning it down. I wonder why it's not clearly posted on the website? Anyhow, the good news is that, because it was only last fall that I was originally accepted, I was able to put in a deferrment to begin this fall instead. So that means, worse case scenario (if I don't get into NSU), I will still be starting nursing school!!!! And from what it sounds, since NSU is your first choice too, we will be seeing eachother either way!
:-) Congrats! And you're welcome, and yeah it looks like we will see eachother either way! Looks like our letters should be here anyday now....hopefully today. Good luck and I will keep you posted.
Here we are, the 18th, and still no letter. The mail already came today, so mayve tomorrow. I know I'm impatient, but it's getting slightly annoying... If they post a "Notification Deadline" of May 15th, it makes you think that you'll have your letter NO later than the 15th. The probably haven't even mailed them yet. Argh...
Yeah, here it is 5 days after the letter was suppose to be mailed......and still no letter. I called the Nursing department earlier today and some lady said the letters were mailed out Friday. I have mail that has the 15th posted on the envelope, delivered to my house on Monday....and I live ten minutes from Norfolk State. So in other words she lied. Like you, I'm getting annoyed too. Ugh!
Funny she told you they were mailed out Friday...I called yesterday too and I was told the letters won't be out until Thursday! That really makes me mad!

Do you apply to the main campus then? Because I found a website for their VA beach campus & I didn't see anything about how to apply there. TIA
Hi Tia,
Yes, you do apply to the main campus. Beware though- there is alot of things about the VA campus that they fail to advertise/inform about...or atleast not clearly. I just had my academic advisment today (as Hampton U is my "fall-back" if I don't get into NSU). The academic advisor took one look at my transcripts and was like, "OH, I really wish you would have come in a couple weeks ago! You are in the perfect position to have started early, in May. You would have started right up in your clinicals." I guess for students that have most of the sciences and general classes out of the way, they've now created a May-start class. It certainly would have been good to know this a couple weeks ago!!!
Good luck...
