Non-religious based medical "missions" that allow kids? Any ideas?

A friend of mine and I were talking today about how we both, at one time or another, had seriously considered joining the Peace Corps. This is not an option for either of us, but we were wondering if anyone knew of any short-term medical "missions" that needed assistance?

My friend is Muslim, and both of us are not really comfortable taking part in a Christian-type mission where religion plays a large part. Also, she has a 10 year old son that she home-schools (she is a single mother) and was interested in a program that allows children to go (I do know that some of the Christian-based missions allow children).

Any ideas? Thanks!

It seems that 6 months is the shortest these guys do...

Perhaps you would have an easier time if you did not think of the program as a "mission", but as an opportunity to work overseas. Any place you work, here or abroad, can be a mission. Look at travel nursing websites, ANA, etc. Good luck.
