For those of you who live in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin area, what is the monthly average electric bill?? I am seriously considering moving to Texas due to the high cost of living in Boston, but am afraid the cost of electricity in Texas would negate any saving on rent. Thanks to all who respond!!!!!!

what size is there family of yours. I mean a single person will pay maybe 100.00 a month or so here in a apt. and maybe 200.00 in a energy efficient home. I have a 3 br home and i get 300.00 a month bill, but thats a/c all day ,apliances,wash/dry alot. My 2 bedroom apt got a 175.00 or so bill running everything alot.

It also depends on the age and condition of your air conditioning unit. In general, dwellings that have newer AC units will turn out much cheaper energy bills.
I am a single person who lives in a newer 1,800 square foot single family house. My AC unit is a 2004 model, which is fairly newish. My energy bills run about $65 monthly in the summer, about $45 to $50 in the milder fall and spring months, and about $100 to $130 in the colder winter months. I only run the AC unit when I am home because, to me, it doesn't make sense to have the thing operating when I am at work or out shopping.
On the other hand, my friend has an old, inefficient AC unit from 1983. She lives in a 1,500 square foot house in the DFW area, and keeps the AC unit running 24/7 at about 74 degrees. Her energy bills run about $500 per month. A local repairman told her that her bills are so expensive due to several reasons: 1) she is heating and cooling an older, inefficient house and 2) the AC unit is old, outdated, and can't quite keep up with the energy demands being placed on it and 3) her bills would substantially drop if she replaced her old AC unit with a newer one.
I had another friend who lived in a newer 1,300 square foot house in north Fort Worth that had an AC system from 2005. Her monthly energy bills averaged about $125 per month. She kept her AC unit running 24/7 and set at 76 degrees all the time.
