non-compact state - moving to az in the future

U.S.A. Arizona

Hello Everyone:

I have a question. How does it work in obtaining a license if I'm relocating from the state of MA to AZ? I don't think MA is a compact state. Do I need to retake boards or just apply for a license.

Thank you for any information you provide.

Hi Laurie,

Welcome to the AZ board! I'm a transplant from Mass, I moved here from Boston about 11 years ago. As far as I know I think that if you don't plan on working in Mass you can just apply for your license here.....Also, I don't think the waiting lists for programs here are as long as back in Mass. When I researched attending Nursing School there a couple of years ago, the wait was around 3 years for Mass schools as opposed to a 1-2 semester wait here. Also, the cost of schooling here is ALOT less expensive, about half the price. The cost for my 2 year ADN program is about 5000.00....

Here is a link to the Maricopa County Community College website. There's information about the various progams there. There is also an advanced placement option for students who attended Nursing School elsewhere and wish to transfer in.....

If you need any more info please feel free to pm me!

Even if your current state is a "Compact" state, you move, and that cancels out the compact part of it. Your legal residence must remain in the original state for the compact part of it to be valid.

Either way, you will need to get an Arizona license, the issue is if you do it directly with your home state, or with Arizona.

NCLEX is a National Exam, it is honored by all 50 states. Once you take it and pass, you never have to take it again. The score is just submitted to the new state. You need to complete the application for Endorsement and follow what it tells you to do.

You are correct, MA is not a compact state. AZ became a compact state in 2002. Here is a list and the link at the NCSBN for those states who are participating or are pending to participate in Compact Nurse Licensure:

National Council of State Boards of Nursing

I hope that helps you.

Thank you all very much for your input.
