non-bedside position with bedside hours?

Published

Hello! I am having a dilemma and would like some input:

I am an RN with a background in telemetry. I just accepted a new job in south florida for another tele job. I would really like to get out of bedside nursing; the stress, the families, they are putting me over the edge! But I LOVE the hours and flexibility of bedside nursing! I like working every other weekend (less childcare issues) and I like only working 3 12-hour shifts/week with the option of dropping down to per diem. And down here in Florida floor nurses can sign up for Snowbird Season shifts and only work oct-january.

I like the thought of working in the OR, endo, wound care, cath lab, pacu, CM etc. But most of them are 9-5 m-f, with call on the weekends. Are there any other non-bedside positions with bedside hours/flexibility?

:nurse: Thanks!

Find a job at a psychiatric hospital, working with children or adolescents, that offers 12 hour shifts. If you work nighttime 12 hour shifts, you may have to spend 2-3 hours a night actually working with the patients, and the rest of the time you are mostly working at a desk doing paperwork. Really not terribly stressful at all. I actually work 5 8-hour night shifts and the only really stressful part of my night, typically, is the last 30-60 minutes of the night when we have to wake the kids up and give them their medication. And then THAT'S if we have a bad group of kids; sometimes with a fairly good group of kids, that last bit of time really isn't stressful at all.

I'm actually somewhat unhappy with my job right now, but that's because I'm stuck with the five 8-hour shifts. If I were working 12 hour shifts, I would be perfectly happy.

When I wanted to start backing away from the bedside I took a part-time position doing bedflow. This is a job that has bedside nursing hours including the weekend and holiday rotations. The place I worked at actually turned over bedflow to the staffing office at 11pm, so that meant no night shifts (which was great for me, yay!). Another job I've done with those hours is nursing supervisor and I loved this job. In fact the only reason I'm leaving it is because it was only part-time and I needed a full-time job. I did have to do shift and holiday rotation and occasional weekends because it was such a small group and we had to cover for one another for vacation and sick days.

Telephone Triage in a 24/7 call center....

What about something like IV team or rapid response team?

Thanks for the answers! I think the PICC team sounds like fun....
