Suppose you have an adult patient who has specified "no visitors except these couple of people", and the patient's mother wants to visit but is not on the list. How would you handle this?

I have this happen a lot, as the community I work in has a high incidence of domestic violence. Half the rooms have "No Visitors: See Nurse" signs on the doors. We always ask the patient first, unless the person in question has a PNG (Persona Non Grata) order, in which case we just call security.

Typically, in these cases, the patient is wanting only 1 or 2 people to visit. Or there is a specific person who is NOT allowed in (and they have PNG order) Leave a Comment

This question stemmed from an experience the other day. The patient's mom wanted to visit but the patient had made a list with several people that she wasn't on. The nurse didn't let the mom in or tell the patient the mom was there, and at first I was like yeah! stand up for your patient! Then I kind of felt bad for the mom. Of course, who knows what kind of dynamics are going on in that family that we have no idea about. So I tried not to judge the patient too harshly. We don't often deal with this kind of thing so it was a new scenario for me to consider.
