No FNP jobs????

Published

I graduated in Nov 2015, took boards in April and passed first time around (thank God). Had a bit of a break in between due to a family emergency which resulted in my parents moving in with me and my family.

Anyway, I'm having the worst time finding an NP position. I've worked in a major trauma teaching hospital for over six years in ICU/CCU and there are no jobs available there...the other major hospital organization requires at least one year experience as an NP or they won't even look at your resume. I've sent out tons and tons of applications, resumes, reached out to preceptors...all say the same thing, just no jobs right now.

Is anyone else having this problem? I'm considering a post grad psych certification to make myself more marketable. Just out of school and I really don't want to start again, but not sure what I'll do if I can't find something soon! Student loan pymts just started up and I really thought I'd be in my first NP job by now...

I'm looking in Louisville, KY. Maybe I will just start dropping by offices...thing is, how do you go about that? Just ask receptionist if you can speak to the doc? Or drop off something for him/her?

I agree, you should definitely be reaching out directly to doctor's via email or in person. I try to search to see if the office has a website and an email address. In that, I write a nice cover letter and attach my resume.

In person visit to drop off your resume is preferred. Dress up nice and go around lunch time. Ask to see if the doc has a a few minutes to speak to you about a job opportunity. Most likely you'll be turned away a decent amount of the time. But there will be many places that will surely take your resume and keep it on file.

Most of the best jobs are never advertised. Use all of your contacts to try and find an upcoming opening including your work colleagues and your clinical sites!

Yes, go around lunch time, you can ask front desk when they go to lunch and speak to the manager and/or doctor for a few minutes. You can always drop your resume and follow up with a call as well. Doing the cover letter and resume has worked for me as well for smaller type of clinics.

Hey Morglan thank you so much for posting your situation. I am having the exact issue in Louisville. My husband and I moved here as soon as I graduated in September because he got a new job. I took my FNP boards the beginning of February and haven't had any feedback on any jobs I have applied for. I have searched every online site and applied for lots of jobs, but still nothing. I thought maybe I was only having trouble because I am new to the area. Since I am still having difficulty with landing a NP job and there doesn't seem like an opportunity approaching any time soon I would like to find an RN job in the meantime. I have over 5 years RN experience as a Med-Surg/ Telemetry nurse. Any suggestions on which hospitals would be best to get an RN job preferably something PRN? Any information would be appreciated! I hope you soon find the job you are looking for! :)

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. UL Hospital (Kentucky One/Catholic Health Initiatives) is always looking for PRN nurses! Good luck.
