I graduated in Nov 2015, took boards in April and passed first time around (thank God). Had a bit of a break in between due to a family emergency which resulted in my parents moving in with me and my family.
Anyway, I'm having the worst time finding an NP position. I've worked in a major trauma teaching hospital for over six years in ICU/CCU and there are no jobs available there...the other major hospital organization requires at least one year experience as an NP or they won't even look at your resume. I've sent out tons and tons of applications, resumes, reached out to preceptors...all say the same thing, just no jobs right now.
Is anyone else having this problem? I'm considering a post grad psych certification to make myself more marketable. Just out of school and I really don't want to start again, but not sure what I'll do if I can't find something soon! Student loan pymts just started up and I really thought I'd be in my first NP job by now...

Go to a less saturated market. You sometimes have to make sacrifices to get what you want.

Look to move. Avoid the coasts. Go to rural areas.
I plan on living rural my whole life. Monetarily it pays to do so when in the medical field. Never lived in a city, can't stand it lol

Yes I agree with the others. If you're in a very saturated area, it'll be very difficult. Where are you located?
I'm in the NJ/NY area. It can get pretty competitive, but there are definitely new grad openings from time to time.
I'd look to relocate if it is indeed very difficult. For a new graduate with your RN experience, it shouldn't be too difficult to at least land a few interviews.
Thanks for your responses. I live in Kentucky, so already fairly rural. Louisville is fairly saturated at the moment. Moving or relocating is a little tough as my kids are pretty involved with programs...I'd hate to move everybody up just for my initial 1 or 2 years of experience and just end up moving back since we are pretty rooted. It seems like other students I know end up working where they worked before, just as a NP...unfortunately this has not been the case for me as it seems everyone is in a hiring freeze!
Do any of you think it's worth it to mail out resumes to individual doctors' groups/offices? Or would this just be disregarded? Also I've read where new grads have offered themselves as an internship/volunteer position without pay for one or two days per week -- any ideas about this? I wouldn't even know how to go about that...
At this point, I'd work for any setting...my RN experience is hospital ICU for over 10 years, but I've applied to urgent care clinics, doctors' groups, home health, derm, geriatric, even correctional care...

Heck forget about mailing your resume...stop by and drop your resume off in person! I have many many friends who found jobs that way..usually in privately owned practices. The physician owners are too stressed and too busy to hunt for an NP. You should go to them!
