NMC Registration since new changes

Just wanted to say I am a uk trained nurse and we are expected to have around 4000 hours half clinical and half theory before we can be entered on the register. Don't know if this is same requirement for internationally trained nurses

as per the NMC on trained outside the EU

Adult (general) nursing

Applicants must have completed a full time programme at post secondary level

leading to registration as a general nurse.

The duration of the programme must be a minimum of 4,600 hours. At least half of

the programme (2,300 hours) must be in clinical or practical training and at least

one third (or 1,533 hours) must be theoretical training.

The programme must have included theoretical and practical instruction in:

 General and specialist medicine.

 General and specialist surgery.

 Childcare and paediatrics.

 Maternity (obstetric) care.

 Mental health and psychiatry.

 Care of the elderly.

 Community/primary care nursing.

Thank you for your reply! I am aware of these figures, but I have a question regarding self-study hours. I've been told that some universities calculate study hours. Is that included as part of the hour requirement, or how does that work exactly? That's not something I've ever heard of here in the US.

Yes your have to do 2300 of study time which can include a certain amount of self directed study (basically reading weeks before exams and time to complete dissertation). Obviously the contact teaching time needs to be a lot more.

Thanks for the clarification! I'm currently in communication with the university where I received my training to try to work this out also. Calculating study time is not something that we typically do here, so that should actually help a lot. The NMC just wants more proof of more hours, and since I was in school for 4 years with almost no breaks, I know I can get it. I've just been trying to figure out how. Thanks again for your help!

When we trained over here I am only got a total of 8 weeks off in the year not like other degrees who received almost 20 weeks off in a year. You will have done the study in the 4 years and as you say it will be down to getting the university to put in the information down on paper.

From what I've heard, that's about as good as it gets right now if you're a foreign nurse being licensed in the UK. Congratulations! I hope it all goes well for you!

Now, if some US nurses could get UK licensure, it would be great...

The NMC do not take in to account self study hours because the universities cannot evidence that you have actually done it they just assume.

Unfortunately this is affecting the majority of applicants from US Canada Australia.. They are not even getting a maximum ONP we are just getting rejected. The minimum decision letter is 20 plt plus 3 months supervised practise.

If you are from Canada US or Aus you would be lucky to get 20 plt plus 12 months ONP.
