Hi cherryswith,

you made a comment that your questions were easier than the ones in your study book. What study book did you use to study with? Oh and congratulations on your score

marcos

Hello all,

I just took the NLN RN pre-admission test last Friday. The test administrator said that we should have our results in a week to two weeks, but I'm already driving myself nuts! I felt like I did well on the test and it seemed easier than the practice tests in the study book (except for the science section). Just based on my gut feeling, I'd say I got 52 out of 60 correct on the verbal section, 36 out of 40 correct on the math section, and 45 out of 60 correct on the science - this last is a very pessimistic speculation. Can anyone give me an idea where my percentile ranking will be, based on the number of correct answers I think I had? Thanks a million in advance!

Hello Alaskalala and Marcos,

I will try to address both your questions in one message. First and foremost, thank you for responding to my post.

I just took a course in college algebra in the past few years and everything on the math portion of the test was covered by the course. If you study Mary McDonald's guide, and you are able to work through the problems in the practice tests, you will do fine on the math section. Some areas to focus on are percentages and fractions. The only formulas that I can think of that you might need to know are the formulas for calculating area and volume. You will also want to be familiar with the order of operations. As for the science, what helped me more than anything was literally taking notes on the entire science section of the study guide. I highlighted the important stuff, re-wrote it in my own words, then re-re-wrote the notes. If there are areas that you don't feel comfortable with, such as physics, chemistry, or electricity, go online and research those areas. Purchasing a text book on any subject you feel uncertain about will help you gather information that will be helpful on the test.

I used The Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam by Mary McDonald (the ISBN for this book is 0763724866). This is the book for the RN version of the NLN. If you are entering an LPN or Surgical Tech. program, chances are you will be taking the LN version. There is a separate book for this test, written also by Mary McDonald (the ISBN for the LN version is 073724874). The guide was VERY helpful to me in preparing for the test, especially the science section - it has been a looong time since I had a science course.

Hope this helps and best of luck to both of you!

Hi, I was just reading your post in my paranoid state since I am taking the NLN next week. It was great to see some of the areas to focus on. It is also nice to hear that you took many notes from the science section of the review book, I have been doing the same. I also went into each vocabulary and reading comprehension section and wrote down every word I was not familiar or unsure about, a total of 400 words, I hope two or three of them are on the NLN. Did you find the physics review in the Mary McDonald review book to be enough? I have never had Physics and that is the section I am mainly worried about. I keep hearing there are questions on electricity, but I feel that the review book barely touches on this topic, any support on this that can be provided would be sooooo appreciated, back to the books, 24 hours till the day of the exam. :balloons:

Great minds think alike! hehe....I also wrote down all the vocab words in the practice tests that I didn't know the definitions to. I defined them all (www.thefreedictionary.com is a wonderful resourse, btw) and then went over them until I could remember the definition for each. Several of the practice test words were on the exam.

Now that you mention it, there were a lot of electricity questions on the science section of the test. One that sticks in my mind was where they showed four different circuits (parallel, series, and two different combinations of series-parallel) and asked which ammeter would measure the highest voltage. I TOTALLY MISSED that one! The sad part is, I work with electricity every day and that is the area I know least about! Anyhoo, get comfortable with McDonald's practice guide, and find some extra resources to study electricity. You should do fine. I got my score back in 8 days. Hopefully, you will get yours quickly, too. The waiting is the toughest part!

BTW, are you taking the RN or the LN version of the NLN?

hi and thanks so much for the electrical info. I have no idea about that stuff, but I better find out quickly. I am taking the RN NLN-PAX in NewYork. I have gone over so many of those words but how will I ever remember them. I am hoping that I will recognize a definition since it is multiple choice. Did you take the exam recently and was it the RN version? Were there many anatomical diagram questions, how about Physics formulas or mathematical formulas? I have been studying the anatomical parts for all the main systems of the body and the cell. In addition hormones, enzymes, now math from the begining to pre algebra. where there questions on dna rna bases? there is so much to cover and my little brain is going to explode. Where did you take your test, are you accepted into a school yet?

I got my NLN RN score back today - 99th PERCENTILE!!!!!! The program I'm shooting for is pretty competitive, but people have gotten in with lower percentiles. As long as I keep my GPA up, I feel comfortable that I'll get in. WHEW!

Hi cherryswitch! congrats on the results. Hope you got in.

Can you advice me how to get ready to the English section. I am an international student and don't really know what would be the best way to prepare other than the NLN preparatory book. Not too much in that book about Egnlish section. Thank you
