Hi everyone...
I am graduating an ADN course from a private school in Dec. While the school has had a variety of healthcare programs (LPN, MA, DA, RT, etc...), the RN program is fairly new. While it is approved by the state board of nursing, they have not received NLN accredidation and will maybe be only at candidacy stage by my graduation. I do not forsee CCNE status at all...
I wish to enter the Army Reserves with an ADN and become an officer by going through OBLC. Here's the trick, however:
The recruiter I spoke with stated that I would not be eligible because the school is not approved by NLN. I find it difficult to believe that in this era or recruitment shortcomings, that someone who wants to enlist would be turned away because of this. I also know that there is a way to overcome any obstacle, and that a waiver can be obtained for almost anything.
Has anyone encountered this or is able to offer any insight? Do I need to get approval from the office of the Secretary of Education (I thought I saw that as an option)...
Any help is, well, helpful...
Thanks,
Fast

This is a tough situation for you, but there have been several other posters on this forum in similar circumstances... from what I understand, this a non-negotiable issue... bottom line is: no accreditation, no commission. Sorry, but if this what you really want to do, I suggest you find a different school to get your BSN, then go in, or try one of the Nurse candidate programs.

Thanks for the reply, Lifeafter40. I searched but couldn't find any other posts, I wish I could. I'll keep looking.
My eventual goal is to go active duty while attending the Army CRNA program, so, worst case scenario I could go through the accelerated BSN program at Univ of Phoenix. Expensive, but very quick and they are CCNE approved. I was just hoping to utilize some Reserve benefits while attending.
I am hoping someone will post with some way of getting a it waived. I know that waivers can be obtained for pretty much anything, just a matter of difficulty.
Someone gimme some good news...

Fast,
I am in the same boat. I just left the USAFR for the USAR's 6250th at Ft Lewis WA based on the idea that when I graduate RN school in August 09 I can commission. Unfortunately, the AMMED recruiter told me my school Clover Park Tech isn't listed, which it isn't. I called the school and explained my situation and they told me, very rudely, that they will have NLNAC accreditation within 5 yrs. I am now looking for either a waiver or loophole or starting my RN with Excelsior.

Chris,
search for R601-37 This is the USAREC recruiting regulation and it has a quick paragraph that talks about the non-accredited programs.

Thanks for the info. It looks like a lot to sort through. Can you give a specific chapter/section? I would appreciate it if you have time.
ctr+f search type

okay, found it. it states: "[color=#231f20][color=#231f20][color=#231f20]
applicants for any amedd corps must be
graduates of educational programs accredited
by an accrediting agency or association under
the u.s. secretary of education and approved
by tsg." and furthur states "[color=#231f20][color=#231f20][color=#231f20]
the commissioner of education can identify
state agencies that have been recognized
as reliable authorities for determining the quality
of nursing education in their respective states.
these states are known as “magic states” and
include the following:
(a) iowa.
(b) maryland.
© missouri.
(d) montana.
(e) new york.
(f) north dakota."
neither helps me with the non-accredited school. it does help with the excelsior college. is there a paragraph that i am missing?
Chris - no I apologize I do not see any 'loophole' either. I was just trying to provide a reference to what the recruiter might be referencing as I know I prefer to see the reg to understand the situation...
I only had it because I stumbled across it a few days ago -
Is it possible that the WA NG might accept the pending certification of the school?
Another option is perhaps upon graduation from clover park - if you were to stay in the general area - you could enroll in Tacoma RN to BSN program - and while attending school and working you could then apply to the service?
I hope you find a better solution - thanks for your service!
Thank you for bringing the reg to my attention. I had been searching for it as I prefer to see the writing :-)
Here are the options that I am considering:
1. finish RN school at CPTC and enroll at UWT in Fall 2009 (maybe there is a commissioning opportunity at that point)
2. obtain RN through Excelsior college and then enroll at UWT in Fall 2009
I have presented both options to the AMEDD recruiter and I am waiting to here back from him.
Again, thank you very much for the help, I truely appreciate it.
ps I'll let you know what I find out
93, I have another note:
If you see if through the WA ARNG if you are eligible for the STRAP program. they normally pay ARNG 1,900 a month if they have their RN and get accepted to a BSN or MSN program...
Would you be interested in active duty?
They will pay 10k lump + 1k per month for those in last 24 months of BSN program.
Look forward to hearing more and good luck

I am a diploma nurse and I am looking into Chamberlain to get my BSN. It is completely online, no clinicals, and is certified by NLN and CCNE. It also looks like it might be less expensive than Excelsior too (Ive looked at them as well). I am awaiting December boards, and hope to commission sometime before Christmas.
