NJCU experience w/ accelerated BSN program

Published

Hello all!

I was wondering if there were any New Jersey City Univerity (NJCU) nursing students or grads out there that can share their experience with the accelerated (12 month) BSN program at Jersey City, NJ. I really want to make sure I can handle this fast-track program. I would be making many personal (not to mention financial sacrifices) IF I were to be accepted. My biggest concern is that I have a 2 year old son and am afraid of not being able to have any time with him. How demanding is this program?

I would so very much appreciate your opinions on this....

Thanks!

Hi cjslady,

I'm in the same boat. I am also hoping to apply to NJCU's program in the fall, but will have a 6 month-old baby by then. I would love to hear opinions from other students about how rigorous the course is, and if it's realistically do-able for new moms.

Hey, there! Sorry that I can't offer you any help, but I wanted to give you a quick shout out since NJCU is my alma matter! Class of 97..Psych major! Good luck to you. I start my LPN course next month up here in Buffalo, NY.

~Bright Blessings!~

Cislady,

I am currently in the program and just finished up my first semester. I must say that it is time consuming and very demanding but doable. You will cry, scream, laugh, maybe not sleep..lol..but it can be done. With the baby, you will definitely need some type of support. There is alot of reading, reading, assignments, papers, and all that good stuff all at the same time..lol..However as long as you manage your time effectively and have some type of support. You will be fine. I have 2 boys myself but my husband helps me out alot. I am pretty much a geek but I will say that I was doubting myself for the first time. Nursing school is a different world altogether esp. the exams. We had 6 courses for the first semester and its pretty much the same each semester. I ended up getting all As but it gets harder so I dont know how long I will keep this up. But I am relaxing now enjoying my little break. So, with that said, if this is something you want to do, Do it. Its 12 months, very intense but worthwile and you are a RN with another bachelors, which is pretty cool. And if you are unemployed, inquire about the tuition waiver at your local unemployment, they may cover the WHOLE TUITION but it depends on your office and their rules and regulations cuz every office is different, which is not fair.

Hi! Yes, it would be so helpful to hear others' experience w/ the program.

All the best to you!

Thank you for your post Maryjanefine! I'm so happy to hear that although difficult, the degree is doable. Thankgoodness, I also have a supportive husband. One quick question, at what time do classes start and finish usually? I want to make sure I have my son's drop off and pick up times from daycare covered...

I'll look into the tuition waiver since I plan to quit my current job...

Thanks a million!

Happy New Year Maryjanefine!

Thank you! You've provided me with valuable info on the program. For some reason I was under the impression I would be in school the entire day-from morning to evening-mon thru fri. I see it will be more like a fulltime job while still allowing me to spend some time (although very limited-I'm sure) time with my family. I really hope I get accepted for the 2011 cohort (fingers crossed).

Again, thank you for being such a wonderful resource...I hope the new year brings you much joy and success!

Hello!

I am also looking towards the NJCU accel bsn program-- except i'm applying to the one in wall township. Thank you for your infomation maryjanefine--

do you know how competitive this program is? What was the standard GPA for those ACCEPTED into the program?

thanks!

Well on the website it says 3.0 or higher. I would assume it is very competitive because I believe njcu has the shortest and one of the most least expensive program.

yes and also the least pre- reqs!

Often the required gpa and actual one that most students have is a different number.. just curious what is considered a competitive gpa

Sorry I found this board late. Is anyone still here? I am in the cohort at the Wall campus. We just took our exit HESI exam (we are finishing in May). I agree with those current students that have already posted about the program being tough, but do-able. If you have a family, you WILL need support because when you are not in class, you will be studying/reading/working on some project.

If you have any other questions, feel free!
