.9 = Nine 8-hour night shifts in two weeks. Too much?

Published

I apologize that I'm reposting this thread, I think I posted it in the wrong place. Oops!

I just moved from a different state and I am used to working 12-hour shifts. A hospital I applied to and have an interview with next week works on 8-hour shifts. The job is .9, so that's NINE 8-hour shifts in two weeks, and they are 11p.m. to 7:30 a.m. I'm a night shift nurse, but I'm worried that this is going to burn me out. (I was hoping for fewer shifts, but can't find anything else) Is this common, and are there any success stories or advice? There aren't a whole lot of jobs around here, so I'm sort of taking what I can get. The hospital is supposed to be wonderful and only a couple of miles from my house, so hopefully that will make up for the bad hours?

Thanks for any thoughts you might have for me! :nurse:

Right now I work nine 8's. I hate it. I Feel so tired all of the time. Mainly b/c I work 3-11, which means I'm there by 2:45 and I don't leave to around midnight. All I want to do is sleep. We are possibly beginning 12 hr shifts in October and I can't wait!

This is TOTALLY dependant upon your age. When I was 23, 3 12's were no problem. Loved the continuity, loved the 4 days off in a row.

As a 50 year old, 12 hours just about kills me, and if I had to work full time, I might well kill somebody else.

Back in the UK most of the shifts are 5 X 8hr shifts but you do get good vacations which kinda compensates for only having 2 days off a week.

I work 5 X 8 hour shifts after having done 3X12's for years I really miss my time off
