Night shift workers who sleep?

Published

Have any of you heard of O.R. nurses or techs who sleep during night shift? If so, was management aware of this?

So it seems it's not an isolated issue! (It's a pet peeve of mine too. Around 0130 this morning I was in our break room using the computer when a coworker came in with a flannel blanket in her hand and said, "I always pick the wrong time to come on break... there's always somebody in here with the lights on and making noise." I wanted to smack her!)

Oh, my! There are always things to be done in the surgery department.

Sleeping on the job? Give me a break.

Specializes in O.R..

they should be setting up the o.r. rooms for the next day and making sure they have all their supplies for the cases the next day!! also making sure there is a emergency general case cart ready at all times.

signed 5yr night worker before nsg.school

yap, i also saw s0me of my colleagues sleeping. In my opinion, if all the w0rk is finished, like setting OR f0r m0rning cses, preparing emergency carts, and d0ing r0utine w0rk, it is okey to sleep..because if u finish all ur w0rk and you d0n't have anything t0 d0, at dawn you wil feel sleepy..i experience something like that..if your eyes are heavy, you can sleep, but be sure to be alert if someb0dy calls f0r emergency.

We actually have sleep rooms at work if things are slow. On night shift, we set up rooms for the next day, go through case carts, etc. But if things are quiet, we can go back and grab a few hours of sleep. The RN has the charge beeper if any traumas come in. We get up early and open certain cases for the day shift. The RN, tech, CRNA, and MDA are allowed to sleep if they are on the beeper (the tech doesn't have a beeper). We work 16 hr night shifts (3pm -7am).
