I can't believe the hatred between the shifts on this floor (it's a med/surg floor). All I hear when I come in is how "your day shift sucks" and then each of us is told off by respective nurses, about how much we left, how they had to do one thing or another...To my knowledge, we're all trying our best. Days is very busy. I've worked nights for years so I know the difference. I'm not going to get into the differences or who is right or wrong. I just wonder if this ridiculous hatred is ever going to stop. Or is it some tribal thing I'll have to put up with forever?
It goes both ways. I came in an hour ago. I have some downtime right now so don't flame me but my patient is agitated and vented and the day shift nurse says oh he's been like that all day and when I looked at the charting from her shift she's documenting a MAAS of 1 and he's a MAAS of 4.
MAAS of 1 is completely non responsive. What were they thinking? I have issues when on a neuro exam on a vented pt who can follow commands but yet they don't try to talk , they chart 1 for verbal. They are a 3, they can respond just not speak due to the ETT/trach. How hard is that to understand even for neuro nurses.
Thats what I want to know. AND she's with a preceptor.
Luv: Get off the cross. My patient is taken care of. Patient has been turned and given mouthcare. Labs have been drawn. New IVs hung because they were all empty. Co-workers are ok, don't need help. Nothing else needs to be done at the moment. I wouldn't be on here if I had something to do.

Trama- Im not on a cross, just dont waste my time at work sitting on the internet!! Like I said before there is always something that can be done. I may work in assisted living now, but worked in one of the top 3 hospitals in the US on a neuro floor and even when all was taken care of, there is still something better to do with your time.
Ok there is always something to be done. However we aren't at work with Trauma so there isn't any need to tell her she ought to be doing something besides being on the internet when she stated she has downtime. Everyone spends downtime at work differnetly. I look at allnurses too while I am at work when I have some downtime too. I also clean up my pt rooms, restock drawers, look at my pt CT/MRI scans, etc.
Back to the regularly scheduled therad.

Also I agree that we are not at work with trauma, but if your not on your break then what are you doing on the internet? Anyways, I just think that everyone no matter what their shift should get their work done, so the next shift isnt overwhelmed before they even see their patients!
I'm a new cna in an ltc. I was hired 3rd shift and had to spend three days training on days which was a complete nightmare because the day shift can't stand the night shift and they hated having to teach me things I'm not going to do on that shift. Granted I may one day change shifts but every day they were short handed anyway and had to spend all this extra time with me because I was orientating (company policy). Guess who got the brunt of their frustration? yea that was fun, NOT! I can't wait till my first third shift.
We are on the original topic. Night shift nursing not doing their job.....refer to previous relpies!
I thought it was DAY shift not doing their job. All my previous replies state my previously mentioned thought as do many others. I have seen countless day nurses on the internet or phone or whatever and not doing their jobs too. I know that isn't the majority but a select minority.
Back to the regularly scheduled thread again.
OK whichever day shift, evening shift or night shift. Nurses should be doing their job and helping out instead of wasting time. Thats my entire point. I dont think the shift hate is a good thing at all. Unfortunatly that is just how it is , due to people feeling like they are part of a certain click. Maybe one day it wont be this way.:heartbeatlove all around

I wish it wasn't that way, but it sure seems as if each shift thinks it's THE best, and that they do more than anyone other shift. Having worked all three shifts within the next year, I agree--each one has it's challenges but each one is doing the best it possibly can do. There are several nurses in my facility who have been known to say "I'm a better nurse than ______" What? Is it a competition or a race? How about just giving your best to your patients?
