Good luck to you! It was also my dream to start in NICU nursing, which I was very lucky to get the opportunity to get a coveted NICU residency slot when I graduated. I think your answer was a good start: Experience with rapid change in patient status. Another really important piece I am sure you experienced was working with families during a very difficult time. Family centered care is a HUGE component of NICU nursing, and I am sure using that buzz word will help ensure a favorable interview for you. Look up a little article about family centered care for your interview. What it is incorporating the family in making decision for the patient and having them help provide care for the infant, for example they can take temperatures, reposition the patient, change diapers and do kangaroo care holding. Again, good luck I hope you achieve your dream!

Thanks so much for all of the advice. This is my dream position so I am hoping I can get an in person interview. As of now I think there are about 30 candidates, the essays will narrow it down to 10 and then 3 people get hired.

When you go to the interview, you just tell them that NICU and adult ICU are the same in that they are both critical care units in which the patients need watching and observing every hour. You can also tell them that you have studied pediatrics in nursing school and therefore would be qualified to do NICU.

Here are a few tips for your NICU interview:

1. Know as much NICU nursing vocabulary as you can and more if needed. The more that you know, the better. You can show pictures as well.

2. Know as much nursing knowledge as possible.

3. Do research on NICU and about the place that you are interviewing.

4. Do research on their policies and procedures.

5. Wear a suit or a nice dress on the interview.

6. Always think and plan ahead of questions that they might ask and be prepared to answer them.

The way that you associate NICU Nursing to adult ICU are in the following ways:

1. You understand that the monitors and the machines can work for adults and for the babies in the NICU.

2. You also understand the anatomy and physiology of both the adult and the baby. Even though they are very different in size and have different needs, they both are similar in that the locations of the organs are the same. I believe that you will be very good for this new job and I wish you the best.

Congratulations on the chance of becoming a NICU nurse. That is wonderful and fantastic. The things that I took away when I was in the NICU unit were these things:

1. Always be prepared.

2. Know your jargon words.

3. Know what your goals are and what you want to do.

4. Understand what you need to accomplish.

NICU and CCU are the same in that they are intensive care. The only difference is that one works with babies and that is the NICU that uses incubators and one is for children and adults.

1. Know and understand your jargon words.

2. Understand what the job entails.

3. Understand the companies rules and regulations.

4. Do a mock interview so that you understand everything.

The experiences that I have that helped me work in the NICU/ICU were the fact that I have worked with babies/children before in a nursery and I have volunteered before in the CCU/ICU and PCU. To me, those experiences prepared me well for the NICU/ICU unit. I am so thankful to have had those experiences. I wish you all of the best.
