NICU NURSES....labeling breast milk???

Specialties NICU

Published

Hello Everyone!! I am doing some research for our NICU to find an easy, more fool proof way to label breast milk for all the different patients in our unit.

I would appreciate any and all feedback! Please let me know what facility you are from and what your process is.

Do you treat it like blood (bodily fluid) and require 2 people to veryify, do you use a color coding system, do you have to scan patients and breast milk, like you do meds?

Thanks in advance!

Mom is given patient labels and another colored label that is marked fresh or frozen. Date and time pumped have to be on the label. Moms give us the containers to check and we place them in fridge or freezer.

Always 2 RN check label and we document it in the computer.

We do breastmilk labels and do double check with 2 RN's.

Mothers pump milk , place label on bottle ,with date and time of pumping .When we use milk 2 nurses check name and date , their is also a image of an animal on each label , as a quick visual cue .

A different animal image specifically assigned to each baby?
