Hi guys! I just went to our welcoming reception this morning and I found out that we are going to practice IV, blood draw, injections and NG tube with our partners. I'm starting the program next week and I'm not looking forward to the NG tube part. Can anyone tell me how that is done and do you have any tips on how to do it correctly. I know that we will be trained first before doing it on ourselves but I just want to get a little insight from those of you who have done this before. I'm getting pretty nervous about this one:eek: . I need some advice please. Thanks a lot!
We have not been allowed to do anything to each other than to pretend to ambulate in and out of bed and BPs for the most part. Anything invasive is considered too much of a liability and absolutely not allowed on school grounds.
Sometimes when I read these types of posts I am so grateful I am attending the college where I am....geeeeesh......

I just want to add that placement can also be done by checking the pH of gastric juices.
I also want to add that keofeed tubes DO NOT HAVE to be checked with x-ray. Seriously. You will be taught this but I'm telling you that with 100% certainty this is not true. MANY MANY MANY parents go home from children's hospital with ng tubes for their children and DO NOT check placement with xray at home. Some of the tubes have a wire and actually some do not. In fact some parents take the wire out first before placing while others leave it in.
When I told my instructors this they were shocked. They had no idea. Well since this is happening at some of the best hospitals in the country...I don't for 1 second question the fact that an x-ray is not necessary.
Oh and I've been told that on NCLEX if they ask about checking placement the answer will be pH of gastric juices.
