NG tube feeding

Hi everyone, newbie here! Well, I think I will introduce myself another day. Right now I am in panic mode! I have no clue what I am doing with this. NG tube feeding is not at all easy for me. I keep getting air in the tube and pinching at the wrong times. I do not know what I am aspirating for either or if I am even doing it right! I need like....step by step, ABC-123 instructions on this. It is for skills demo on Saturday! We do not have to insert the NG tube, we just have to administer the feeding and then make sure we flush it with 30cc of water. Anyone know of any resources or would anyone here be willing to help? Yes, I have a skills book, Potter and Perry and boy are the instructions erratic! Please help anyone, thanks! :)

this is a "decent"..repeat decent demonstration. There are some things I do differently when I give my meds to patients, but it's a start.

So after gathering all the materials and washing your hands, you'll want to check for placement and patency. You don't want to start feeding if the tube is in the lungs would you? Pinch the tubing and insert a 50ml syringe. If you don't, gunk may come back and splash you. If you don't do this, you may end up messy and you'll never forget again. Push in 20ml of air while auscultating the stomach for gurgles. Then (for our program at least) you aspirate the contents and measure. If you have more than 30 mins worth of feeding that you aspirate (or depending on your facility guidelines) you'll stop or slow down the feeding. Have a basin available in case there is more than 50ml of residue in the stomach. Put the stomach contents back into the NG tube.

Hang the feeding bag. Open the line and let the feeding fill the line to the very tip. Pinch the NG tube and connect the feeding line to it. Thread the tubing through the feeding pump. Set the rate.

When the feeding is done, pinch the NG tube and disconnect the feeding line. Get your 50ml syringe and pull the plunger out. Fill it with 30ml of water and let it gravity feed into the stomach by raising it 12" or so above the tube's insertion point into the body. NEVER push the fluids in with the plunger!

As silly as it may sound, the only thing I need help with is keeping the air of the tube. I am crimping the tube wrong or something or not tight enough, Im not sure. But it is tomorrow so oh well. I probably will not get it and just ask for re-do. Thanks for the help anyway guys! :):):):):):):):):):):):):):)
