Newly hired CNA worries

Nursing Students CNA/MA

I was hired a month ago for my first CNA job. I like helping out but I have bad anxiety before each shift. I feel like I mess up a lotAny advice to calm my erratic nerves? I wasn't oriented or shadow so I feel like I didn't have the proper training of the facility. I do not want to quit because of my bad anxiety.

You had NO orientation or training? They just tossed you onto a floor?

The first day I was able to "partner" up but I still had my resident load of 9. I, to this day, dread going into my shifts because I don't feel comfortable as I should.

Unfortunately, you won't feel comfortable until you have done the job for some time, orientation or no orientation. If you resign from this job and go to another, you will just start a having a greater feeling of discomfort again. Suggest you share your feelings with your charge nurse, s/he should take the time to set you up with some help. If they just brush you off, you need to decide whether you will stick it out until you get your sea legs, or if you want to start over somewhere else.

Thank you. I do realize if I start somewhere else I will just have the same feelings. I figured just giving it time I will feel more comfortable.

Yup, you need to give it some time. Go easy on yourself. You WILL learn.

We (those of us with a little experience) say it generally takes a month to get a routine down.

Even after a month, you will still be learning.

~Considering that you have had, pretty much, no orientation it will take you longer to be comfortable with what you're doing.

Just keep reminding yourself that you went to classes, you passed a state test and you really do know this! You will be slower, but that's normal! I seriously doubt ANYONE expects you to be at the speed of a seasoned CNA.

Don't be so hard on yourself.

I'll bet that you aren't messing up as badly as you think....because you haven't been fired! :cheeky:

Seriously, if you are infact "messing up" it's just minor things that really don't matter in the end, Otherwise, someone would have been hurt, or you would have been written up by now. So it can't be all that bad.

When you mess up, learn from it.

Messing up is part of learning.
