NEWGRADS: non-RN job with active RN license YAY or NAY?

Published

Hey all

Is it possible for this new grad to apply for a non RN job with my active license? It's impossible to get in the door otherwise! I'm talking medical scribe, medical assistant, unit secretary, telephone person ANYTHING ..... BUT with the active RN license will they just dismiss me as being overqualified? like i'm stuck between a rock and a hard place now. Anyone has ever done something like that? Please lemme know what to do. Thank you

The employer knows you're going to take off running as soon as you find a nursing job, so you're unlikely to be considered for any other position. The only time I've seen nurses working as unit clerks (or the like) is when they already had the job prior to graduation.

In addition, the BON will hold you to the standards of the RN license, even if your job description doesn't.

I thought about that too! But I was thinking like they won't need to train me much hopefully that's a plus for them? I was a medical assistant prior to being RN. Thanks for your input! What a dilemma for me T.T

If you've already worked as a medical assistant, they may consider you for that type of position. I also have an active RN license, but have a non-RN job as an ECG Technician. I was hired into this position before I had my license, though, so I am not sure what would happen if I tried to apply for it, with an RN license, without having worked here before. Any healthcare experience is better than nothing. Keep looking for all nursing positions, as you may be able to do what I am right now, having two part-time jobs, one as an RN and one as a non-RN.
