Hello! My name is Theresa and I'm new to allnurses.com I just wanted to introduce myself. I am a pre-nursing student at a local community college and am a little nervous about going into nursing school. I am excited because in a few short years i will be able to move out on my own and start my own life. However, i know i will have to deal with a lot of rubbish. I just wanna know what i'm getting myself into....if that makes any sense lol. Thanks!!:kiss

Hello and welcome theresa!

I grew up in Butler Co., PA..pretty close to you! I have since gone to school, grown up, married and started to pursue other career options in nursing. The only advice I can think to give you right now is to enjoy the time you have at home with minimal expense, while you can. As you will find, nursing school is intensive and can be costly...the longer you can stay at home bill-free and not have to work too much will have a great impact on your student life, I feel. You will have the rest of your life to "move out and start your own life", so kick back and enjoy!

You say you want to know what you are getting yourself into? You should check into a CNA position at Jameson or St. Francis, or maybe the LTC facilites in and around the county. A certified Nurse's Aid position will require a certification course with a fee involved, but some places will pay for the course, and certification costs, if you agree to work for them, in some cases, even part time. Something to check into anyway. I found this to offer HUGE insight into the industry. It at least gives you a place to start, you know? There are a lot of people in my nursing program that have never worked in any type of healthcare setting, and I feel that they may be at a slight disadvantage.
