Newbie - Study help

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am new here, I am so glad I found this forum, after years of attending traditional courses and no closer to entering a program, I decided to give independent study a try.

I am pursuing EC LPN-RN. I do work full-time, but really would like to complete my RN.

I am attempting to prepare for my first exam. My retention isn't what it use to be and it wasn't that great to start with. I feel like I am running around in circles, back and forth, I just don't see any progression in my studying because, I can't seem to follow the free content guide, it seems to be all over the place, I feel so lost. I guess I don't know exactly how to use the the guide and text books yet.

Any help for an old woman that is trying to learn how to develop a study format to follow.

Thank you, and Best wishes.

I started on march 30th of last year and I should be getting my cpne date march or april of this year. I took one test a month and I had all of my prerequisites complete before I started. Good luck!!! You can do this!!!

Good Luck on your CPNE. Your almost done!!! Great job!!!

Hi! I just wanted to say I am new here too and wondered if you would be interested in an online study/support buddy?? I feel I am having the same issues you are...I feel like it is difficult to determine what is "fluff" and what are the important topics to study! I am preparing for my first exam as well (Transition to RN...). I haven't even gotten up the nerve to schedule it yet!!! If you do not want to exchange info and help each other, that's ok and I wish you the best of luck in your studies!!!!

Hi I'm new too I'd be interested in studying! I'm currently doing microbiology..

Hi Natnat,

What is your study plan, are you scheduled yet. Have you taken any tests yet, or is micro your first?

It would be great if we could get a network of newbies to bounce ideas around with.

I use : My studygroup 101 notes, Quizlet.com, flashcardexchange.com, and the practice tests A and B! You just really need to base your studying off of the free content guide that excelsior gives you and use your resources. The books, nclex review books, i even youtube specific diseases or processes i dont understand. Good Luck!

Microbiology will be my first test. I also need A&P and Lifespan developmental psychology. I decided to start Microbiology first, then A&P and finally the psychology.

My study plan so far is sg101 and I have started reading "Microbiology DeMistified." I bought the sg101 for only 10 bucks for a downloadable link to the computer from a link that was posted by above reader (thanks reebokHCFR!). I really like Microbiology demistified so far and the sg101 I just started reading today but that seems pretty thorough as well.. what's your study plan?

Hey Nat,

I will be using the content guide for my outline, I purchased all older edition of the recommended textbooks from amazon, ebay and half.com. I will use a weekly study schedule to stay on task. I also plan on using EC's practice exams, sg101 and I just got in the mail the other day, Saunders Comprehensive NCLEX review and love it. Someone on this forum said it was very good.

Now......the reason I haven't started studying is because I am still in 2 traditional classes at the university, I was giving traditional BSN program a shot..... today I was off and all day, I worked on a paper. I have a paper due every week,,,,ekkk.....I will be glad when I can dedicate 100% to my EC exam. I found with work and home responsibilities that home studies is more doable for me. I have 1 online class that is working great, so I have come to the conclusion that online and independent study is the way to go.

I am so excited to get started. The only prereqs I need is Information Lit, micro and A&P. I have had a few EC pals in the past, but they must have gotten discouraged and stopped posting, I hope this time around I can find people that are willing to post and stay in touch in between their studying and testing. Just this week alone, I feel so encouraged by everyone here, the support is great.

Hi Audrey,

How's it going, what is quiznet.com? I also use You tube, I love it, but be careful because once I was watching a dressing change and the presenter contaminated her field, I sure wouldn't want to pick up the wrong techniques. What are you working on now?

Quizlet.com is amazing!! It online flashcards. You can put in your own, share, add other peoples sets to your sets, print them out for free. Dont get the plus or paid version, I even started a excleior RN group on there. You can search by topic or chapter, or even specific excelsior exam name.

Oh and I am working on Transitions, hoping my memorization skills will be good enough for that exam!

give yourself plenty of time to study, take notes, DO the practice exams before the actual exam, they are worth every penny and you can go back and study the answers and rationals. Get the recomended texts (used if you can) and I have used SG101 too, they do help, they are kind of like outlines for the exams. Good luck to you--it's not easy, but if you are dedicated you can do it!!!

Thank you so much, I have been a big fan of allnurses for years and over the past few months, I decided to get serious about EC, this forum is such a great line of support.
