New York University (NYU) ABSN fall 2019

It's a little early but I figured I would start this thread as we all begin to get our applications in!

I applied mid February and heard back in the first round of decisions. Also to people asking for stats, I don’t think that’s really something you can rely on to estimate if you’ll get in or not, because people get rejected with better stats sometimes and people get accepted with worse! I think there’s a lot of consideration going into experience, letters of rec, and probably the personal essay as well. I just say this because I have plenty of B’s in several of my prereqs, but I got in. I just don’t think the “comparing stats” game is necessarily a reliable angle! Good luck to everyone still waiting!!

I couldn't agree more! I think a good essay and references definitely help. I also don't think it is necessary to have a medical background.

The details should be in Congratulations from NYU Meyers email...check the bottom of that email.

I called & she also told me to check an email & thought I meant orientation. Is it only after you accept admission? My email only said “Your NYU Admissions Decision is Ready to View”

No you should get another email from admissions. I received it almost a week after my decision was made. I didn't even get the your NYU Decision is ready email, I found out that I was accepted because I randomly checked Albert. You don't have to accept admission to get that email...I think if you're in NY and deciding before schools, accepted students night is very helpful.

Not to rain on anyone’s parade here, but the whole notion that you are “guaranteed a job” after graduation is utterly wrong and inaccurate. Are nurses in demand? Sure but that doesn’t really mean you are getting something off the bat. Unless you know someone or are ALREADY working in a hospital under some capacity, it’s really not that easy. Volunteering at a hospital helps too. My friend was just hired at a hospital here in NYC after logging over 250 volunteer hours there prior.

Again, not trying to be a downer, but we have got to be realistic and practical here. Oh and debt (especially 100k and rising) REALLY sucks. To each his/her own though!

I can’t agree more! My friend who just graduate from nyu during fall semester is still looking for a job, it’s not guaranteed that you will be able to get a job, connection definitely matters.

Everyone I know who’s graduated from this program, albeit only 3 people, had no problem finding jobs (Currently at NYP, Mt.Sinai, & NYU). I know someone who went to Hunter who is currently still looking, but she was also traveling & such, so factors vary. Personally I feel theres more job security with NYU but feel free to go to another school and take your chances. NYU themselves boasts abt their post-grad employment rates with 93% job placement- I trust the stats.

People who have went to NYU told me the debt sucks, but theyre happy theyre able to pay them and I shouldnt use it as a deterrent because loans at this phase are practically inevitable. I went to undergrad on a full scholarship so its a large amount esp to me, but you have to do what you have to do. Ive never had a problem being hired for a job in the healthcare field because jobs are always out there...

I dont know anyone who went through Mt. Sinai’s program to compare.

Are you originally from the NYC area?

Yes.

Leaning towards NYU, the extra money is off putting but a job is pretty much guaranteed afterwards so youd def be able to pay them back (although I heard Mt. Sinai put out a memo theyre hiring 140+ new nurses & im assuming they’d consider their own students favorably). I also heard some ppl dont show up for class at NYU because everything is podcasted which sounds flexible to me ??‍♀️ Who are you leaning towards and why? I need counsel too!

Where have you heard Mount Sinai put out a memo they're hiring 140+ nurses?

I know people who work there.

I’m sorry but do you believe EVERY stat that you come across? The average hiring rate after graduation for nurses nationwide is about 6 months or so. This is still much better than other professions but again, it is not a guarantee at all.

You also indicated that you never had trouble getting hired within a medical setting/institution. You already have an advantage as opposed to someone who has no medical experience at all.

Look, NYU has an EXCELLENT reputation in terms of networking and their facilities which seem to be appearing all over the city lately. But to say that you are guaranteed a job after graduation is absolutely ludicrous. To those that you spoke to, I can almost guarantee that they worked in a hospital or medical setting in some capacity in one way or another which greatly enhanced their resume and chances of being hired.

In short: Theres no “guarantee.”

As previously alluded to, I am not trying to be a downer, but rather a practical and realistic person.

Youre right. There is no guarantee. Just as there’s no guarantee any of us will wake up tomorrow or even finish the program. & yes, having medical experience will increase your chances of being hired.... as will attending NYU, IMO.
