Debate of the nursing schools

U.S.A. New York

so my plan didn't go as planned and i am still taking pre req's-instead of being in nursing school. it's probably for the best, because this gives me a chance to research some more and take more classes-as opposed to me being in nursing school with outside pre req's to take.

anyway, i've met a few ppl in class who are going for nursing as well, and we were talking about cochran and dorothea hopfer. one of the girls had said that she wanted to go to cochran while i said i would like to go to dorothea since its so conveniently close to me. i'm also a ged graduate and dorothea only asks for h.s chem or college level.

she then said that her father is a health care professional and that those in the medical field look down on the program at hopfer because the program is going poorly...she advised me to go to cochran. i know that ultimately the choice is mine and to tell the truth if i can get accepted in to hopfer that is where i would like to study. but i just wanted to see if there were any graduates or students of hopfer who feel the program is slacking. i tried pm'ing a couple pf the ppl i spoke with early this year on this site that were in hopfer but they haven't been on in many months.

thanks for any input.

Hello there!

I am about to graduate from Hopfer this December. Here is my two cents:

Each nursing program has its pros and cons. I applied to both Cochran and Hopfer because I thought both had similar programs/requirements on paper. Cochran was closer to my home, but I chose Hopfer because I felt a more personalized attention there. The faculty go above and beyond what needs to be done to help all of the students.

Yes, it is true that the pass rate at Hopfer has gone down. Why? Because Hopfer is a place that does everything it can to pass its students, even if they may not be academically ready to move to the next semester or take the NCLEX. After seeing this for 2 years, I think they should be stricter on they academic standards and raise the passing grade from 75 to 78 or 80. There are also some students who do not prepare properly for the NCLEX on their own.

My honest opinion is that no matter where you graduate from, when you get those two letters behind your name and your first job, it all comes into focus. I work full time for another highly respected nursing program in NYC and most of those students have trouble finding work also, so reputation cannot substitute for presentation. I say go where you will be happy because that is important to success. I attended a college fair last night and a representative from Mercy College was so impressed to hear I would be graduating from Hopfer because "they have some of the best prepared nurses". I was so extremely shocked/proud to hear this! I have found that Hopfer graduates are respected in most Westchester facilities. Outside of that, looked down upon. Do I care? No because all those people's opinions do not pay my tuition, take my tests, or get me off of long CUNY waiting lists.

Every person's experience is a different one. Make sure you are happy with your own and not what others think your experience should be.

Feel free to PM me anytime.

Hopfer's NCLEXRN 2010 pass rate is the best for all private nursing programs in the area, go to OP NYSED website to check them out. Make your decision on the facts not on the comments of the uninformed.
