New to working in a hospital

Hello. I've worked in nursing homes for 3 years and now am new to working on a medsurg floor in a hospital. I'm still in training with a preceptor. At this point I've been allowed to take care of up to 3 patients. My problem is this : I feel like I know nothing. Iv stuff and all the skills are new to me since I've never done them in a nursing home. I already feel discouraged because I've made so many minor mistakes . I feel maybe the hospital isn't for me after all. I'm not sure what to do. Did any of you feel this way?

Based on your other post about the PICC dressing change gone wrong, my advice would be to stop winging it and speak up! Ask for help if you need it. Ask for clarification if you're unsure. Ask your preceptor to observe you doing tasks you're not certain you can complete independently. Take advantage of this time that you have a devoted preceptor, that's what they're there for.

I, too, fear that you're going to find yourself in trouble if you don't use this orientation period just as a brand new nurse would. You and your preceptor need to be doing most things together all the way through the process for right now. Just be straight up with him/her: I know I've been a nurse for a few years but I feel very unsure in this setting, so can we go about this the way you would with someone who's "green"?
